Thank You Sir for your service to this country and the department. I did not know you personally but got the chance to meet your son who was an Explorer with me. He is a great person and I know you would be proud of the man he is becoming as he followed your footsteps in joining the Army.

You were going to work just like any other day and for the fact that you were a deputy your life was taken away. It is very unfortunate that we live in a world where law enforcement is hated by many. Nothing can replace the father and husband that you were. My step-father is also a deputy and knowing that his life is also at risk simply because he has a badge that represents law enforcement terrifies me. I send my deepest condolences to your family. I’ve never met you before nor have I ever heard of you until I looked up fallen LASD deputies. You stuck out to me because of the look in your eyes. I feel as if I can know you just by looking at your pictures, I may have never got the honor to meet you but it’s an honor to walk the same path as you. I’m currently going through academy class 437 with LASD and look forward to graduating the academy to continue the work that you and other officers strive to do every day. Even though we never got the chance to meet I feel honored writing about you.

Cases like these are an eye opener to me that this could happen to anyone at any point on or off duty. It sad to live in a world with so much hate, but that it why I have chosen this line of work to help those who don’t have anyone and continue the work of those who were taken from us too early. Deputy Escalante we have the watch from here.

Words cannot express how much it feels to lose someone so young; however, this young Deputy made the ultimate sacrifice. He was not only willing to give it for his country by serving in the military, but he decided to share that love for the community as well, when many other people choose safer careers. Deputy Escalante, you Sir will be remembered as a hero who was not only willing to put his life on the line for country, community, and family; but for those Deputies you served with day-in and day-out. Deputy Juan Escalante was a part of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. According to the page, it stated that two gang members approached Deputy Escalante. These gang members had the intent to kill this peace officer. The suspects knew exactly where he lived and wanted payback previous run-ins with peace officers.
Deputy Escalante was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves and was on served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 2-1/2 years. He is survived by his wife and three children. It is important that we learn from these tragedies in order to protect one another. It is important to understand that some people just dislike peace officers and will do anything to hurt them. They will even go as far as to find where you live and try to hurt you there. We must always be vigilant and be aware of our surroundings. Deputy Escalante was ambushed at home and it is a reminder that this career is unforgiving and each day can be our last.

Sir, I never got the chance to get to know you. I was a new Deputy just off training at MCJ when you were taken from us. My last memory of you was walking past each other in the locker room at shift change. I called MCJ my home for 6 1/2 years. During that time I had the opportunity to work with Deputies who called you friend. They shared stories about the fun times they had with you at work and how much they miss you. Over the years your locker and all its messages still stand as a constant reminder of your sacrifice and the love your partners have for you.
