This is a Spartan oath about their shield.

This is my shield, I bear it before me in battle, But it is not mine alone, It protects my brother on my left, It protects my city. I will never let my brother out of it's shadow, nor my city out of it's shelter. I wil die with my shield before me facing the enemy.

I know that Deputy Tate put on his badge at the start of his shift (His shield)and went to work to do the job he loved. Deputy Tate was the thin blue line between good and evil. My prayers are with Deputy Tates family and the fine men and women he worked with. Deputy Tate is a true warrior and hero. God bless my brother, rest in peace.
