Your heroism and service is honored today, the third anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace

My sincerest apologies for not having left a reflection about your untimely death much sooner. From all accounts you were a fine young Trooper who had garnered much respect in spite of the fact that you had only been a member of the ISP for such a short time. You and I had something in common as I also was a Correction Officer before becoming a Police Officer. The other day I had the pleasure of meeting Trooper Robert Leffert as I traveled through the Township of Galena on I-80 and I must say that he was a true professional just as I am sure you were. May you rest in peace and may God bless the men and women of the Indiana State Police.

"I am the Trooper"
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.
I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I've been for you.
The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call "The Statie,"
But I'm just a person, not to be hated.
And through the years I've come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge ... take this gun ...
Will you take it ... will anyone?
And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly.
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
you did not go alone:
for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
you love is still our guide;
and though we cannot see you,
you are always by your side.
Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.
*Today is the one yr mark since we lost you. I miss you more than ever little brother. My heart is still torn, yet my memories of you are strong. We love you forever and ever and are so very proud of you! God Bless all of those who serve both standing and fallen. You will never be forgotten.
Love Always,

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Trooper Barrett. It is a hard thing to lose a family member, but to lose one the way Daniel died does not make it any easier. He will never be forgotten and remembered fondly by others. I too have gone through the loss of losing someone close to me in the line of duty. My "brother" Shane Britton EOW 7-19-2000 was also taken from us in an on-duty Auto accident. As time goes on the loss and the heartache get easier to bear, but not a day will go by that you do not miss your loved one. I am sure that you all are very proud of Daniel as you should be and he is honored here by all who know him and those that were not fortunate to know him. He seems by all accounts to be a wonderful man, and Heaven has truly received a great gift!

To those who loved Trooper Barrett, my heart goes to you all. Know that you're not alone in this journey you walk. I lost my fiance in the line of duty January 2003 and my world was forever changed. Even as time as gone forward, and I've found many reasons and ways to smile, I still have not forgotten the man that he was. Dennis was a beautiful person and he forever has a part of my heart, just as I'm sure Daniel will always be a part of yours.
It takes a special person to put their lives on the line everyday to make this world a little safer for us all. I know many of these men never would've thought of themselves as "heroes" but they were in so many ways. It's sad that it they had to lose their lives for some of us to see that. Having said that, thank you Trooper Barrett for helping to make this world a better place. You will not be forgotten here in Winnipeg. I know this isn't a very manly thing to do, but if you happen to run into Dennis up there, please give him a big hug for the kids and I. Dennis was a good man and we miss him more than words can say.
Wishing those who loved you brighter and better days,

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Trooper Barrett and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Trooper Barrett has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.
To the family, friends, and colleagues of Trooper Barrett, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Trooper Barrett is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.
