Reflections for Officer Douglas Scott Russell

I LEARNED OF YOUR DEATH WHILE IN RENO NEV FOR THE ASSOC. MEETING. IT WAS DEVASTATING TO THE ENTIRE OFFICERS AND COMMAND OFFICERS PRESENT. I WAS FORTUNATE TO SHARE DINNERS AND MORE THAN A FEW BEERS WITH YOU AT AREA REP MEETINGS, ALONG WITH JOE. MY DEEPESTS SORROW AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOUR WIFE LYNN AND FAMILY. HAVING LOST TWO BROTHER OFFICERS IN OCEANSIDE IN 18 MONTHS, WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE PLACERVILLE SQUAD IS GOING THRU. BE ASSURED THAT YOUR BROTHER AND SISTER OFFICERS IN OCEANSIDE ARE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU. GOD BLESS

No combination of words or emotions can express the amount of gratitude we have for your service to the law enforcement profession. Your actions are those of a true hero. You will be remembered for you courage and dedication to duty.

It is so very tragic that your twenty two year career has ended this way; but rest peacefully knowing that there are others out there who will continue to fight the good fight in your honor.

Our strength, prayers, and thoughts are sent to your family and your colleagues on the California Highway Patrol.

Thank you.

"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Respectfully submitted on behalf of my department,

Officer Matthew Lewek

Well, we buried Scott yesterday. It was a very sad occasion, but hopefully the start of some badly needed healing. I was honored to be part of the motorcade, knowing that we were giving Scott his final and well deserved last respects. I was also honored to stand beside my brothers and sisters who, like me, have to "put on the tans" and go back out there. And we will, count on it! Guys/gals, we are a family. Let's look to each other to get through this. Let's live our lives as Scotty would want, with a renewed strength and appreciation for each other. Scott would want us to keep the "fun" in disfunctional! Let's be here for Lynn and show her what our "FAMILY" is all about. God Bless the Placerville squad!

Officer Russell,
My heart and prayers go out to your wife and family. To lose someone you love so dearly is so painful. My husband's partner was murdered 3 years ago by a gang member and I saw his widower/my friend in so much agony preceeding his death and how much she still misses him today. I will never be able to understand why people can have no regard for life what so ever. I have the upmost respect for law enforcement. You are a true hero for sacrificing your life for others in your community to be safe. May God Bless You.

Today, 8-6-07 0820 hrs, I again put on my class A uniform and black band. The locker room was silent as my fellow officers dressed next to me. We all know the daily sacrifice that Officer Douglas Russell did each day. We hope that by showing our presence that his family, friends, and fellow officers know we are there for them and also grieving. God Bless.

Officer Russell,
I thank you for all the years of service you gave. For the sacrifice of your life no words can say anything to soothe the hurt that is felt. I never met you but you were my brother and your loss is felt by all of your family all over the country. God Bless You and your family!

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

I am very honored to have known Officer Russell. We responded to vehicle accidents together on several occasions, and he was always that one officer you hope would be there with you. I will always remember 1 call in particular. It was an elderly woman who went off the shoulder, overcorrected, went into the oncoming lane, back over to the other side with skid marks all the way until she went off the road, down an embankment, and then confused the gas pedal for the brake pedal. Needless to say she traveled quite a distance until a chain-link fence stopped her. I can't beleive she did not hit someone head-on. She went on to tell me about another accident she was in a couple days prior. She ran into something in a parking lot. I relayed this information to Officer Russell. A couple of days later I get this phone call from the lady telling me that the officer had taken her license away, and she was wondering if somehow I could help her out. Yeah right!! Anyway, I just wanted to share, because that to me really showed how concerned he was for public safety. I will really miss seeing him out there. Rest in Peace, I will never forget you.

As my family and I where returning home from South Lake Tahoe, we observed the incident that took Officer Russell's life. That moment will be engraved until my time has come. I never met him, but I feel a loss. Officer Russell fought for and served the citizens of this great nation, how many lives did he save, how many lives did he change, how many lives slept safe because of Officer Russell and those like him. I did not know him, but I will truely miss him.

Officer Douglas Scott Russell, I salute you and all the men and women that serve to protect us.
