Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Paul Steven Habelt

My dad Gerald Lewis worked with Paul’s dad Milt at OPD. My family became good friends with Milt and Florence. I only remember knowing about Paul. I believe he was grown and out of his parents home by the time we (my mom dad sister and brother and I) visited his childhood home. Also Milt and Florence would often come to our house for barbecues. As a young child I recall being excited when we saw them and I remember his parents fondly.
Such kind and sweet people.
My dad told me about Paul’s death. He was touched and very sad about it.
I don’t know when Milt and Florence died but I believe it was before Paul’s death. My dad died in 2012 at the age 93.
RIP Paul, Florence and Milt.

I met officer Habelt when he responded to the scene of an accident I was involved in in South Lake Tahoe back in 1974. He was 100% professional, absolutely a model officer. I met him again when we both testified at trial for the drunk driver who had fled the scene of the accident.

A couple years later I was horrified to learn of Officer Habelt being shot 5 times at point blank range with a 45 caliber handgun when he responded to a disturbance that turned out to be a hostage situation after some kind of drug deal gone bad (Tahoe locals may recall the Locklear case). Miraculously Officer Habelt survived; it's a remarkable testament to his character that the chose to return to police work after enduring injuries that certainly qualified him for a lifetime ticket on 100% disability. One of the best.

Well, here we are today. 10 years later and it continues to feel surreal. I miss you so much. You made such an impact on my life and I will never forget that. You gave yourself so selflessly to protect others. I remember the conversation we had about that. You always told me it was a calling. I think of the strength you had and I use that in my own life. Thank you for being you and being such an angel in our lives. You will live forever in our hearts!
