Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Raul V. Gama

My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Gama's family and co-workers. I recently lost my husband. Know that time will heal the wound, but the scar will last forever so he is never forgotten.

On May 1, 2007 about the time this senseless, tragic event took the life of Raul, I was thumbing through my scrapbook thinking of the day 20 years ago that he and I graduated from LASD Class 235 together. We had been through 18 weeks of pain, sweat, good times, and bad times. It was all worth it to stand on the stage in LaMirada and accept those diplomas. Little did I know that I would hear of his passing just a few hours later. I am proud to have known Raul and honored to have shared a small slice of his life. May he rest in peace and know that God will forever watch over his family until they meet again.

We met years ago at a 924 after working "EARLIES". The beer was COLD and the Carne Asada was HOT. This sucks !
Know you are remembered and your family is still part of OUR family! To Raul's family: we will cry with you, pray with you, pray for you and always be there for you.
Say hi to G-12, Steve and all our brothers and sisters.

On Memory
When you remember me, it means that you
have carried something of who I am with you,
that I have left some mark on who I am on who you are.
It means that you can summon me back to your mind
even though countless years and miles may stand between us.
It means that if we meet again, you will know me,
and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.
For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.
~Frederick Buechner

Thank you Officer Gama for your committment to keeping us safe. Rest in Peace.

Raul,
We became friends when we attended the academy together. We also worked the streets of East Los Angeles. We shared many laughs and we maintained a good friendship. I am honored to have been your friend. I will miss you and although my hurt is overwhelming, my memory of you will give me joy. You were an awesome cop and an incredible family man. God bless you. Rest in Gama Bear.

I HAD THE HONOR AND PRIVELEGE OF WORKING WITH DEPUTY GAMA WHEN HE WOULD COME TO MY UNIT TO WORK OVERTIME. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT ASSSIGNED TO US , HE WAS ALWAYS IN A GOOD MOOD AND WILLING TO GIVE HIS KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM TO SO MANY OF US WHO WANTED TO LEARN FROM HIS EXPERIENCE. FOR THAT I SAY, " SIR, THANK YOU. IT WAS AN HONOR AND A PRIVILEGE TO WORK WITH YOU." TO THE FAMILY OF DEPUTY GAMA, MAY GOD BLESS YOU DURING THIS TIME.

Another Brother In Blue killed by a drunk driver.

When will people wake up and pay attention? When will they learn? When will the citizens of this country stop tolerating drunk driving? The answer, I fear, is never.

But that is why we go out there, every day and every night. We put ourselves on the line, so that the citizens we are sworn to protect do not have to experience the pain Deputy Gama's family is going through, as well as the pain our entire LEO family goes through each time one of us is lost. That's what Deputy Gama died doing. He lived and died a hero. And he will not be forgotten. Rest easy brother, we've got your watch now.

Raul,

"It is not how you died that made you a hero,
It is how you lived!"
Rest in peace my brother your service is done.

I remember the day when you told me that "If you would have to do it again, you would gladly do it all over again." That was when i realized how much you loved going to work. However, during that same conversation, you told me about how it was very important for you to spend time with your family. I would see you at the softball field with your kids smiling and giving your support. I will miss our conversations.

Raul your life and loss will never be forgotten. May God watch over your family, friends, and co-workers during this dark time. It was an HONOR to have met a HERO.
