Reflections for Corporal Nick Samuel Polizzotto

Mr and Mrs Pollizzotto, Tony and Amy:

When I got the news last week about Nick my heart was broken. I sit here thinking about the great times we had growing up being friends and neighbors. Although it has been nearly 20 years since I have seen any of you I remember those days like it was yesterday.
Nothing I can say can ease your pain but please know that I am praying for you. As I read about Nick it is obvious what a great person and police officer he became. We may never know why this happened but Nick is with God now watching over and protecting all of us.
I will forever remember Nick and his ultimate sacrafice as I call for my own son who I named Nick also. We will all stand tall in Nick's honor.

God bless you

D@mnit I am sick and tired of burying our policemen!! You are a true hero Nick, a true warrior in blue. I would like to leave you a warm and fuzzy reflection but the truth is I just can't. In the world evil festers like a huge, open sore. You faced that evil like the man you are. Now you walk the streets of heaven soothing us in thought that you are now patrolling the most honorable beat of all with Sev, Paul and all our other fallen brothers and sister. You are missed and always will be. Please watch over your brothers and sisters.

Nick,
I'm proud to have worked with you on midnights these last 9 years. I'll never forget our time working together, as well as the occasional theraputic car-to-car chat. You were always there for us; both as an officer and as a friend. Joe will grow up knowing exactly what his Dad was...a good man, a good father, a good policeman, and a hero. You and your goofy smile will never be forgotten, nor will the two drunk 350lb brothers we had to fight with at Beacon Bowl. Rest in peace, my brother and friend.

You made the ultimate sacrafice while serving and protecting the community. Watch over the rest of us as we work to make this world a safer place to live. God bless you and your family, you will not be forgotten.

Thank you Nick for making the ultimate sacrifice..and may you rest in the arms of God's heavenly angels.
Our hearts are once again broken as it was just one year and one day since we tragically lost Cpl. Scott Severns.
We pray that Ptl. Michael Norby recovers from his injuries and that God guides him thru his career as one of the many of South Bend's finest.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family, especially Joe and to your extended South Bend Police family.
Not only was it an honor to work with you, it was an honor to have you and Joe be part of our family, Rachael's family, who continues our family tradition of working at SBPD.
God Bless you & may God comfort all those that love(d) you.

I live in Indianapolis and in 2004 our police family also suffered a great loss. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. You did not die in vein, you are and forever will be a hero! I hated to hear that it gets easier... it doesn't it just gets "different".

To the family of Nick.... May God give you peace. The healing takes a lifetime but the memories last that lifetime.I did not know Nick but I feel like he was my little brother too. The words spoken by all were so loving and grateful to have been a part of his life. Now we are all part of that life....related by that thin blue line. I know that there was a wonderful group of angels waiting at those gates for Nick. My brother was there along with all the other heroes. They will take care of him and we are here to take care of you. I hope to get to know each of you as we travel this road side by side. You are in my prayers.

I check this site almost on a daily basis. I've read many reflections for the officers who have sacrificed their lives so that our nation can continue to be the best in the world. However, I only had to read one left for Cpl. Polizzotto to understand what a special man and officer he was. God bless you and your son Sir.

Peace be with you and your loved ones.

I am a former Reserve Patrolman of 8 1/2 years and I am currently a CSIO Officer for a Government facility located in the south central part of Indiana that deals with inner-city students. At this facility we have 650 residential student ages 16 - 24 from Indiana and surrounding states. Today I was discussing this tragedy with a co-worker and a rough 20 year old female student was in the room. When I stated this is the second officer South Bend had lost in a years time she began to argue with me stating the last officer lost was in 2006.

I took this young lady into my office to a board where I display memorials from this site for fallen officers. I pointed to the photo of Corporal Polizzotto and of Corporal Severns. The young lady, who usually only has curse words to say to anyone, touched both photos and stood in disbelief. This young lady is from South Bend and stated, through tear filled eyes, that she knew Corporal Polizzotto. I asked if he was a friend of hers and she softly stated she knew him but, not well. She stated he was always nice to her and treated her like a person. She sobbed for nearly five minutes and slowly turned around to walk out.

This typically "tough as nails" female left my office broken hearted. She said as she left she knew of Corporal Severns and his passing was a tragedy for her and her city and now she was reliving the nightmare. This does to show the far reaching effects Corporal Polizzotto and his fellow officers have in their community. To them I say God Bless, keep your heads up, and continue on with your duties. God Bless you Corporal Polizzotto and may God bless all of the SBPD.

Sadly I did not know Corporal Polizzotto but, I didn't have to know him to know that he was a Hero. A Police Officer is taken for granted most days when he/she puts on their uniform and marks on duty for another shift. Most times, we do not hear of the dangers they face each night and of the "close calls" of their shifts. Corporal Polizzotto was a Hero for doing his job day in and day out. He was a Hero to a community that depended on him to keep chaos at bay. Most importantly, he was a Hero to his son, family, friends, and a department of heartbroken fellow officers.

To all of them, and especially to Corporal Polizzotto, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. My family and I hold each of you in our thoughts and prayers daily. May God keep you Corporal Polizzotto and comfort all of those who knew you and loved you so much. May the wounds of your tragic passing be comforted by the love of our Lord, and may your department continue to stick together in support of one another. It will always be my prayer for them that they never have to endure such a tragedy again. You and Corporal Severens, along with all of your brother and sister officers are Heros in every sense of the word.

As a citizen who never knew him, I am deeply saddened. This is a tragic loss to our community. I know someday his son will look back and be proud that his father was willing to put his life on the line for the citizens of this community. I admire you - all who put there life on the line for us - the people you don't even know. It makes me feel some security in an insecure world - that my children can grow up safe in this community. Thanks,

Pam

Nick,

I hope you were proud of everyone that came to say goodbye yesterday. I stopped at the cemetery today and hope you knew I was there. It was an honor knowing you for the so short of time that you were with us. Tomorrow is the monthly FOP meeting and I will miss sitting next to you as I have done so many times. Please, rest in the peace of Christ as you have deserved that right.

Once again the thin blue line has been delivered a crushing blow but it is the resolve of those you leave behind who will carry on your legacy. My thoughts and prayers are with Corporal Polizzotto's family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time.
It is not how he died that makes Corporal Polizzotto a hero but how he lived.

May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,

Until we meet again,

Thinking back to when I first met you, I first saw the size of your feet and then your wonderful smile. I was one of your training officers but I think you taught me a few things. During our shift we would make our nightly rounds; my sister's house to see my new niece and your house to see your newborn son, Joseph. You were so proud of your son that it showed in every word you said about him. I hadnt seen Joseph till the other day in the newspaper and then at your funeral. Although I would have recognized him anywhere since he is a spitting image of you. I know when you got to heaven waiting for you at the gate was Randy Moore, Paul Deguch, Mike Navarre, Tom Derue and Scott Severns and all our other fellow brothers in blue. You all will keep heaven safe and be our angels here on earth till we all come to meet you. God Bless you Nick for the courage you had to do what you did and make this earth a safer place to be.
