Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Doug Byrne

Doug,

I can't believe this. When I heard about the accident, before anyone could say who it was, I looked at Natalie and said, "I can't help but think of Doug, I think its Doug." I sat not knowing what to do. I called to find out if I could donate blood or help in anyway. I was told to try and get sleep, that there was nothing I could do at the moment.

I agreed, with the resolution that I would come see you in the morning when things had settled down. I awoke to the morning news broadcast and the headline, AURORA OFFICER KILLED. I sat crying with my wife and daughter for a friend gone far before his time.

I asked why someone like you could be taken so soon and in such a manner. I have no answer and expect none will follow. There are no words to describe the person you are. There is not a bad word anyone could find said about you.

To the Marine, the Officer, the Man who I respect deeply...God Bless! I will miss losing to at golf and I will find one of the other guys to give my money to when we play poker. I will see you on the other side.

Your Friend,

Matty

Doug was a kind-hearted, professional police officer. He came onto the job after I did, but I learned much from him. He will be missed.

I was Doug's Sergeant on graveyard two years ago. He had just gotten out of FTO. I liked him right away, he was quiet but always friendly and had a smile on his face. Doug was more of a friend than an employee. Doug was always very professional when contacting the public, and would go that extra step without hesitation. My heart goes out to his family and friends, he will be missed.
