Reflections for Detective Corporal Charles Eugene Smith, II

Chuckie,
I miss you so much brother. I thank God for the times I've spent with you and feel so honored that you called me friend. And next time I'll pass that run because I know you'll be running with me. I love you.

My husband grew up around Beckley and is now a police officer in Indiana. How tragic for the city of Beckley and for Corporal Smith's family and friends. My husband lost 2 friends in 2003 to gunfire and we share the grief and sadness of your loss. May God give you guidance and comfort. And to his wife and daughter, you are in the hearts and prayers of many who grieve with you.

I look at this page every day and I cry. Chucky was a Good Police, and a friend to many. He was the officer that many, including myself are not. I will miss him greatly along with many. We never thought that we would see one of are own on this web page. At this time we can’t breathe, smile or sleep. Chucky is the reason we will stand tall and proud and remember that this is an honorable and just job that many are not willing to do. We will continue on and make you proud brother!! Remember that we love you and will never forget what you did for us and what you stood for.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13

That is exactly what you did. You gave your life for all of us. You will never know how much you meant to so many and what an impression you made on my life alone. We will thank God everyday that you were a part of our lives. The world is at a great loss without you, Chucky, and my only hope is that you may have rubbed off on a few of us! Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. Miss you forever.

Chucky,
You were my best friend when I needed one, you were my partner and my back-up when I needed it. We have spent alot of great times together at work and away from work. I will miss the many conversations we had while we were waiting for that next big bust. You will be greatly missed more than anyone could know. I look at this empty chair sitting in front of me waiting for you to come in and crack a joke at me and for us to talk about what happened the night before. Even though you are gone you will never be forgotten. You will be forever in my heart and I will never ever forget you. You are my HERO Chucky .............

You have given the ultimate sacrifice protecting your community. Most people don't appreciate the role Police Officer's play, they don't realize the selfless acts that are preformed everyday to keep us all safe. You will never be forgot for the sacrifce that you gave and the lives you touched. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and loved ones. May God look after you and your family. It's never said enough, but Thank You.

There are many people who will miss you. You were a good person with a kind and loving heart. You helped Eric get through The Police Academy 111th class. Your support and encouragement meant so much. I remember the two of you coming in on Fridays, you couldn't wait to get home to your family, and the dread on your faces on Sunday, knowing that you had to leave for another week to be put through it once again. You did it though, and you made your family and friends proud.I remember you walking across the stage during Academy graduation. You were so proud and thankful. You were fun to be around and you will be deeply missed by all of us.Thank you for making the world a safer place. Many prayers to your family. We know that we will see your face again one day.You WILL NOT be forgotten!

As a former citezen of Beckley, I would like to thank you Chucky for your dedication and committment to the citizens of Raleigh County and the city of Beckley! May God be with your family and your precious little girl. Words can't express the feeling of hearing of a fallen officer who helped protect my home & family! Enjoy your mansion He made for you!

Officer Smith paid the ultimate price for being the buffer between normal people and the scum of the earth. May his family find solitude in the fact that he was doing what he enjoyed doing and felt compelled to share his talents with all his fellow officers worldwide. There is nothing which can replace him but nothing will ever replace his memory either. We all die a little each time another officer fails to make roll call one more time. May God bless his family and friends.

My deepest sympathy to the immediate family and law enforcement family of Detective Smith. I so hated to hear of another horrific tragedy in West Virginia and to see another life cut so short.
To Britney: I was married to Deputy Bill Giacomo who was also killed in the line of duty 9/11/00 in Summersville, WV. Nothing can prepare you for this or the days and weeks ahead. There are no words appropriate at this time to even come close to consoling you. Just know you will be in my thoughts and prayers. I understand too well the numbness, loneliness, fear, hurt, distrust, and disgust you must be feeling. I pray the Lord gives you the strength you need to get through the trying days, months, and years ahead in not only your pursuit for justice, but with picking up the pieces of your life and that of your daughter's to get through whatever life has to offer for you. I pray that with each passing week, the pain you feel becomes less and that you can again find meaning and peace in your life and that of your daughter. You and your family are so blessed to have a beautiful reminder in your daughter, of the love you and he shared. Please know your husband will go down in history as a hero, died doing a very respectable job in honor, a job in which he loved. In the loss of your husband, may you find hope and some consolation in that you have gained a family of thousands in the law enforcement community who will be there to help meet your daughter's, yours, and your family's needs more than you can ever imagine. I pray the Lord will bless you, your daughter, and Detective Smith's family as he has me.

Thank you not only for your service to the Community, but to your Country as well. You have touched many souls in you short time on this earth.
