Chucky,
You were my best friend when I needed one, you were my partner and my back-up when I needed it. We have spent alot of great times together at work and away from work. I will miss the many conversations we had while we were waiting for that next big bust. You will be greatly missed more than anyone could know. I look at this empty chair sitting in front of me waiting for you to come in and crack a joke at me and for us to talk about what happened the night before. Even though you are gone you will never be forgotten. You will be forever in my heart and I will never ever forget you. You are my HERO Chucky .............

Chucky, While your brothers here are devastated by your loss, you should know that we choose to celebrate your life and the way you lived it- with honor, pride, and at full throttle in your efforts to make our community and department a better place. Your efforts and passion to your profession are duly noted. Your contagious smile and laughter are with us still. All of us here have shared much laughter with you, some at your prompting, some at your expense and good nature- but always in the name of the brotherhood you were so proud to be a part of. Thank you for being a part of our distinguished circle, but mostly for being a treasured friend to us all. We take comfort only in knowing that you now rest in a higher place. Well done.

“The final inspection”

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

I am fortunate to have been in law enforcement for 38 years with close calls but never having to pay the ultimate price. Detective Smith gave the sacrifice which other officers will pay as we strive to make our communities safe and free of the corruptible elements which make up a sad world. When we use the word, "OUR HERO", let the name Charles "Chucky" Smith be placed at the top of the list with all of the other heroes in our profession who made the "Ultimate Sacrifice" above and beyond the call of duty. May GOD in HIS infinite wisdom take Charles "ChuckY" Smith into the eternal kingdom of all the Saints of Justice while comforting and protecting his family and loved ones.

Chucky as I sat here and remember the times I was fortunate enough to answer calls with you, it deeply saddens me that you were taken away from your family and fellow officers by such a cowardly senseless action. I know that you are looking down on us from heaven smiling and laughing as always. You are one of the many angels that watch over us while dealing with the trash that we do. You already know that your daughter will always be taken care of. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

I am really glad that you came to the birthday party that I had for Will on Saturday. I now that it surprised him and all he could talk about was how pumped he was to see you at the house. The world is at a great loss with you gone, Chuck. Some people come into our lives and barely leave an impression. You were a one of a kind, true original and have forever left your mark our hearts, as well as countless others. You made the ultimate sacrifice for the community and for what you loved to do. Your act will be remembered forever by us and all who tell your story. We love you and miss you!
