Reflections for Officer Brent William Clearman

Happy Birthday Brent, I was just telling a few of the guys about that patrol in Korea, when we came across the cow, the tank, and that Korean squad. Those were some good times. There has not been a day that I haven't thought of you. I miss you alot, but take peace in knowing that some day I will see you again.

Hey Marine: Regan, David and I spent some time with Lt.Col Tontini a few weeks ago and spoke about you. Today one of the CHP investigators in my unit and I were talking about you. I am so honored to have been able to know you. You are missed every moment.

I thought about you today. I received my letter from COPS thanking me for the donation for Cathy's walk. I wish I could have given all the money in the world to have you back with us.

Our law enforcement family just lost another star, this time from the Sacramento Sheriff's dept...I went through the academy with him. His death stirred up a lot of emotions within me.

Its not the same down near the dog park where you liked to sit. I was out there last week and it was empty. I had to go. It was wierd. It was like I was looking for something but I knew it could not be found. I've had this profound feeling of loss for a few months now. How did you stay so damn positive?

We have a new officer on the dept who also used to be a sniper (Army I think) I will make sure I tell him about you. Keep looking after us...

Officer Clearman, thank you for your service - to the citizen's of California and to our great Country. Neither you, nor your sacrifice, will ever be forgotten! It is a shame that your murderer faces a maximum sentance of 4 years ---- your family faces a lifetime without you.

Rest in peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Brent,
Just wanted to let you know that you are still in our thoughts and always will be. Your foundation had memorial shirts made and many many of us have them, and wear them in your honor. Almost every day of the week someone is wearing one. We think of you often, and miss hearing your voice on the air.
I know you are a busy man watchng over your fellow patrolmen and keeping them safe, and watching over your beautiful wife.

God Bless the Clearman Family ...

With love and respect ..

Brent...

The event Sunday was a great success!!! Everyone had a great time and thanks to a lot of work by your Foundation things ran smoothly. At one point during the BBQ I looked around and saw children running and playing, friends talking and laughing, and people just enjoying the day. Then I realized it was you that brought all of these people together. I once told Cathy that you touched so many lives during your time here...and you continue to touch lives even today...Cathy, Jeff, Joy, Pete, Erin, and Austin continue to honor your memory with hard work and dedication...I've been so lucky to meet so many wonderful people because of you...and that is a gift I can never repay...but I promise to always honor and cherish those friendships.

Thank you Brother...

Hey Marine, I think about you every day. Sue and I enjoyed being with other hero's families at the Clearman foundation baseball event..some little ones got to see thier first baseball game. You are still making an impact, you always will. Cathy let David and I hold your rifle recently after a dinner. That was very important for us. A few months back we got to meet our first general through your Dad. Spent some time talking to General Troy about you - bragging of course. Semper Fi Marine

Officer Clearman,
I did not have the opportunity to meet you but you probably now know my husband who joined you in heaven almost 10 months ago. If you are not sure who he is ...he is the one trying to get you to play a game of Texas Hold 'em. I am so honored that my 2 young boys and myself have been invited by your wife and the Clearman Foundation to join her at an Oakland A's game this weekend. What an amazing experiene this will be for my boys. Their first experience with baseball. Unfortunately their dad will not be able to share this with them in body but he will always be in their heart. Your wife must be an amazing woman to be able to put this together. You are a hero! Thank you for doing what you loved to do! God Bless your wife and family. I look forward to meeting your wife this weekend. When you run into my husband please remine him that he is my life and I love him!

Brent,

The Clearman Foundation is up and running. We have our second event coming up - S.W.A.T. Kids day with the Oakland A's. Paul did the website - it looks awesome!

Jeff and I are so honored to be helping Cathy with this Foundation. We will carry on your memory, your love of the outdoors and we will help other families with their losses.

In the mean time, Cathy and I will do the C.O.P.S. walk in your memory in October. Rest easy knowing that Cathy is being well taken care of by all of us.

Brent, we put some white carnations (your birth flower) and white lilies from Amy's yard on your grave on Monday. Just as I was placing the vase, I heard a 21 gun salute and Taps just over the hill for another soldier's burial. I couldn't believe how perfect it was.

I love and miss you so much,

Brent,
Not a day goes by that you are not in my thoughts and prayers. A year ago our world was torn apart and this week has been no different. I remembering talking to you about the different ideas you had to make our department better and some of your frustrations about your trip to Louisiana. You would have gone far in this department and your loss will be felt forever. We will never forget you and your memory will live on. Rest easy Brent and don't worry about your family, they are our family too and we will be here for them. You would be proud of Cathy, she is very strong and an inspiration. Rest easy, we'll handle the beat and get the dueces for you.

Ofc. Clearman,

On 08-06-07, CHP Ofc. Russell was laid to rest on your 1 year...he was taken away from family and friends in a similar incident. Your job is one few are willing to do, yet you step up and rise above the rest. Bless you and yours my fellow Marine, you are not forgotten, Semper Fi.

Amazing how fast a year goes by. I will never forget that phone call from Cathy one year ago today and the horrible emotions that went along with the news of your death. Amazing how many memories Eric and I have of you--they keep resurfacing every so often. It is nice to have them; all of them make us laugh and I try to call Cathy when they come up just to help her through all of this. Wish you were still here to play Boggle with us at New Years so I could hear Eric complain about how he hates games or for you to drop by as you are driving through to one of your sniper training events across the nation. I think of you every time I pull out the easels you made for my classroom and when I listen to country music on my way to work. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have Eric in my life and my beautiful children--although I know you would chuckle at that comment. I wouldn't have such a wonderful friend in Cathy, who I can always count on when I need a girlfriend to lend an ear. You have shared more with me than you will ever know. Last year I just could not bring myself to write a letter here, too tough to believe it was real. It is still hard to believe it is real that you are gone. You will be forever missed, forever in our hearts, forever a friend who will never be forgotten.
