Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Special Agent William "Buddy" Sentner, III

This is a note of thanks to all of you that have posted your message on OD. Every day you, as well as my son risked your lives for the good and welfare of the nation. The hole in my heart will never heal, but my reflections are made more bearable by your reflective thoughts. I am forever greatful.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

I count the days, minutes, and seconds in my mind since I last saw you. Time has stopped for me as I still try to wrap my mind around that fateful day. That morning you were so easy going about the 3 minutes we had to wait for the coffee to brew as I nervously thought we were going to be late. If I had only known your fate, I would have waited an eternity for that cup of coffee. You let me be the control freak that I am, while you knew exactly where we needed to go but never let on as I got turned around on those one-way streets. What I wish for now is that we had never found it. We faced the beast with the confidence and knowledge that you had our "backs". I never thought in my wildest dreams that it would be for the last time. I think we all take for granted each and every time we face the potential of a threat and never have to actually confront it. On June 21, 2006, you not only confronted it but you conquered it with all your might, including your life.

Every one speaks of your bravery and your heroism in which you acted out in a way that no other could of ever have dreamed of doing. I am still on this earth because of you Buddy. Not only because of your quick reaction but by the example of your mindful vigilance in what seems to be minutes which were only moments. You are a true hero, a Superman without a cape, an a example of a law enforcement officer that can't be illustrated or described in words. I only hope that people remember your name forvever. I hope that they see your picture and know the feeling of appreciation and awe that I feel. I want all to know that I never knew how "true blue" Buddy's eyes were. In his last moments I know that Buddy saw me and knew that his efforts were not in vain. I know he knew that he had done his "job" and that he had "saved the day". I only wish and wish upon ever day that he were here to tell it first hand and in his own words. I promise you Buddy each day I will remember you and I will make it part of my mission in life on this earth that your memory and your bravery are commemorated by all. I can only attempt to live out my life by your example of the conviction you displayed on that day. You will be forever my angel on my shoulder. I only wish that you were still my fellow agent by my side.

I love you Buddy and I promise I will keep your memory forever alive.

Thank you for giving your life so that the officers of the Bureau of Prisons can work in a safer environment.

You weeded out the 1% of those who make a black mark on the 99% of us who try to do the right thing and uphold the law everyday. It is a shame when we have to worry about our some of our fellow officers in addition to the inmates.

Go rest high on that mountain, Brother your work on earth is done. Thank you for all that you’ve done. I know you'll be keeping heaven safe!

Reality

Imagine how our world would be
If every police officer quit
Turned in their gun, turned in their badge,
Just finally had enough of it.

No respect, no loyalty,
No appreciation of all they do,
They’d give their lives for all of us,
These wonderful officers of “Blue”.

Kicked at, spit on,
Punched, stabbed and shot,
Everyday assaults on officers,
Done…without thinking a second thought!

Our laws are in favor of criminals,
There’s always some loophole in their case,
Out again to commit more crimes and murders
…creates pain, that we, the family and friends
…in time will never erase.

Why should they do it?
Why take the risk?
Why put their life on the line?
Subject their loved ones to endless suffering,
When their precious life is lost while fighting crime.

More murders, more kidnappings, more robberies and rapes,
Just to mention a few,
Please ask yourself how life would be,
If there were NO officers in Blue!

Would you do it? Could you do it?
And for how many…would YOU give it all?
Rewards are a 21 gun salute, a Medal of Honor,
And your name gets added to the Wall.

Think about it. Why are they here?
And why do some hate them so?
Because they enforce the laws that put convicts and murderers
In jail serving time, or on “Death Row”.

All give some and some give all,
It’s a risk they chose to take:
To put their heart and soul in it,
To put their lives at stake.

So, please take a moment,
Please give it deep thought,
Think of what “you can do”…

To help show respect,
To help follow the laws,
So we’d quit losing our Heroes in Blue!

Buddy,

I still can't believe it's true. Seems just like yesterday we were goofing off at the field office in Phoenix...you, me, and "Big Money". Remember all the times at the Orbit cafe for drinks after work. We had some great times, Buddy. I will forever miss you and your friendship. You always had my back, and in true "Buddy" form, you had everyone's back on that fateful morning. Thanks for all you showed me and taught me. And as our "friend" Capone would say, "Man, man, man, look at you."

Thomas Paine in 1776 wrote:

There are times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis shrink from the service of their country;but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered, yet we have the consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.

To William Sentner and men and women like him we can only offer a very inadequate Thank you and uphold their memory with honor and respect.
