Reflections for Officer Earl Harwood Scott

Earl, miss ya buddy, hard to believe its been a dozen years already. It still puts a smile on my face when I think back to our car pool days in CDC and some of the jokes we played on the unsuspecting fellas... I hated to see you leave CDC but you wanted to follow your heart and family. Just like CDC, you brought a smile and a work ethic to be proud of to the CHP. Whenever I pass the area where we lost you, it brings back all those memories again... good and bad, every time. Thank you for your service in both agencies, you inspired us all. You will never be forgotten buddy. Thank you for the good times on and off duty. Rest in peace Earl.

It's been 15 years and 6 months since I first met Earl. I lived with him for 6 months while being his roommate during the academy. It was nice to have someone slightly older and more experienced than me helping me through the process.

I frequently tell stories of Earl's shenanigans to others who just laugh! He was someone I admired and enjoyed spending time with. Rest in Peace my friend!

I remember the day this happened, I didnt want to believe it. I too had the pleasure and honor of working along side Earl as we were graduates of the same CDCR academy, and working at the same institution prior to becoming a CHP Officer. Earl was a great, outstanding Officer. I was just thinking of you the other day. Now you keep watch from above as the eye in the sky. Rest in Peace Earl. You are missed and remembered.

Tomorrow February 17, will be the 8th anniversary of the death of California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Scott who was tragically gunned down and killed during a traffic stop. Before Earl joined the CHP he was a correctional officer and I had the privilege and honor of working with him for a number of years. During a critical incident at which both Earl and I were present his actions helped stop a serious assault on staff. Such actions were commonplace for Earl as he took his job seriously and was diligent in his duties. Regretfully Earl was more of an acquaintance than a friend to me, I wish I had known him better. Fortunately however, he was to me a brother. This is a tribute to my brother Law Enforcement Officer Earl Harwood Scott. Rest in peace my brother, you are both missed and remembered.

Though I never knew you I will never forget this senseless crime. I remember thinking to myself "why would you do that?" I also remember the day when the POS was walked out of the Stockton Detectives Dept in handcuffs and shackles. I remember smiling as I had yet to hear the perp had been arrested. I am glad he was arrested and is now and forever will be incarcerated.

I remember going to Officer Scott's Memorial service as a Recruit at Ray Simmons there in Modesto. Our Acedemy class went to his service and it was a very humbling experience. To this day I still think about that day when ever I hear of an Officer's death. Thank you for your ultimate sacrific. I am and will always be proud to call you my Brother. RIP Officer Scott. You will always be remembered and never forgotten.

Yesterday's Memorial Ceremony brought back a lot of memories, some happy and some sad. Brandon did an awesome job describing the kind of person you were Earl. I think of everyday, and am honored to have worked along side a man like you. I am proud to call my friend.

Earl today was a hard day. You have been gone for 6 years now. This morning felt like early morning 6 years ago. Today your friends and family honored with a roadway dedication in front of your beloved CHP Office. After that concluded there was a special ceremony at The Gallo Center. Your wonderful friend Brandon gave a very nice speech. He spoke about so many things and nailed you right down to your smile that always left people wondering what you knew that they didn't know.

Earl I want you to know that Chris, Tiffany and I think of you every single day. We now know that forever in time when people drive down the roadway that now bears a sign with your name on it , that they will know that CHP Officer Earl Scott was a very important person to so many people. You will be forever in our hearts and are forever our hero. We love you and miss you every single day. Heaven smiles down a little brighter with your smile lighting up every corner.
