Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Richard Allen May, Jr.

I was an officer with the San Mateo police department and had a about two years on at the time of your murder. I was working that night, and I recall the feeling in my gut as we rushed to send a team of officers down to find the coward that shot you. Your funeral was my first Police funeral, and sadly, not my last. Yesterday, I visited your name on the wall at the law enforcement memorial in DC. God Bless you and your family, you are not forgotten.

Rich,

By complete happenstance I became aware of your tragic death a few days ago. I met your brother in law, who had your memorial picture on his office wall, and when the conversation turned to the Central Coast and I looked closer at your picture, sadly I knew it was you. I believe we were classmates at Allen Hancock Police Academy Class 45 in 1989. My career took me out of state so I was unaware of these terrible events until now. I am so very sorry for you and your family. Thank you for your service to your country and your community and Godspeed.

I never met you but I felt the loss of you through the men I was gifted to have worked with who knew you. I saw the tears, I felt the grief. I wasn’t a cop then but I am now and I think about you when I hit the street. You are remembered and considered. I tell people about your story. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Rich,
It’s hard to imagine that it’s been 13 years since u made the ultimate sacrifice. The events of that day from the time I received the call to the moment we got the suspect in custody play through my head vividly. I guess that’s why it doesn’t seem so long ago to me. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to post on here but I still haven’t been able to talk to anyone about that day. Just wanted to let you know you will never be forgotten. Semper FI brother.

Officer May,
What an amazing family you have. They truly are some of the best people I have every met. Though I never knew you, I really wish I did. You seemed to be an amazing father and husband to your family. When I'm with your family, they talk about you all the time. It seem as if every other sentence, you are involved. You have not been forgotten and never will be. To the rest of your family; If you're reading this, I bet you have guessed who it is by now. I have teared up reading the amazing things that have been said to Rich on this page. We love you all and miss you. Much love from Napa <3

Rich, You were a great person and solid officer. I have several memories of working with you and doing ride along with you at the Lompoc Police Department. My most memorable memory of you is when you were working with Ken and the two of you would be code 7 at the police department with your boxes of tacos. All that food you and him used to eat. It was funny to watch. You will always be missed my friend.

Rich, I will always treasure our friendship from high school and college. You always had my back, made me laugh, and showed what a genuinely kind soul you are. We had so many good times and I am so grateful to have crossed paths with you. Friends like you are few and far between. Love, respect, and blessings to your family, friends, and fellow officers. Thank you for the laughs, loyalty, and friendship. See you on the Other Side. <3

I remember standing on the corner of Bay rd & University watching as a sea of officers drove through town to take you to your final resting place... I never met you, but because of that day... Because of the Explorer that rode with you the day you were gunned down, I have taken down the road to become an Officer too. I am an East Palo Alto Explorer and I'm proud to say I was trained by the very same Explorer that helped catch your attacker. It is an honor to wear the same patch you wore. To say I too believe in making my community better.

Thank you for your sacrifice, We will never forget you.

Rest In Peace.

Dear Family of Rich....
I went to school with your husband/dad in San Luis Obispo. We were good friends. I was stunned to see his name in the Fallen Heroes listing. I had to look at his picture to make certain it was the Rich I knew. I am married to a Police Officer of 30 years, Lt Jeffrey Blundell. I know the dangers and try to believe "he's just going to work" but I still worry. To hear of the loss of Rich is overwhelming. My sympathies to your family and Rich's friends and co-workers...the Thin Blue Line reaches far and wide...God Bless him for his sacrifice!
