It isn't very often that someone comes into your family through marriage and becomes as close as a brother to you. Not only was Roy that to me, he was a great friend too.
Roy was always first to offer to help with anything. You could always count on him.
I will always cherish the memories that we made on the campgrounds. Candi and I can never look at a steak without remembering Roy and his shuddering as we ate our steak, "still mooing".
Shelly and Justin, your husband and father will always be remembered with love by Jim, Candi, and I. We pray daily for our Lord to grant you comfort and peace.
We love you and you are always in our thoughts and hearts.
Love Sharlotte, Jimmy and Candi Cain

Son,
If we could have a lifetime wish;
One dream that would come true.
We would pray to God with all our hearts, for yesterday and you.
A thousand words cant bring you back, we know becasue we tried, and neither will a million tears; We know because we've cried.
You left behind our shattered hearts and happy memories too; but we never wanted memories; we only wanted you.

Beloved Son, we love you with all our broken hearts. You will remain a hero forever.

Love,
Dad & Mom
(Roy Sr. & Gloria)

We will miss Roy coming by visiting and offering his help with our migrant labor. He would come by and tell us that if we ever needed help or a translator he was just a call away. He was a very wonderful person in so many ways and we enjoyed his visits, which we will miss deeply. May God be with his family, and we will keep you and family in our prayers.

Thank you for all the wonderful times and memories - we will always hold them close to our hearts. You will be missed here on earth and remembered as a true hero and friend to many.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in SE Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Roy did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Roy be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Sergeant Gonzalez' family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through these tough times, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you and that you are not alone in your "journey". Should you ever need anything please do not hesitate to contact me. (Dennis' department will also always know how to reach me.)

As a fallen officer "survivor" and a friend, please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the McElderry family. I never got the opportunity to know Roy but, I am certain he was well respected and well loved. Roy will live on in the hearts of all the lives he touched. You were all lucky to have had him be a part of your lives, even for a short time. I pray that Roy will continue to watch over us all as only he can.

Thank you Sergeant Gonzalez for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

God, Shelley, what can I say? I loved Roy, even when he told me my hair was messy or that he didn't like the outfit I had on - and you know he had his opinions! Main hall at school will NEVER be the same without Roy stolling down it in or out of uniform. At least I can still see his eyes, his smile, and his mischievousness . . . every time I look at Justin. I love you both.

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

Shelly, I don't know if you remember me, but I knew you from years back. My husband, Deputy Curtis Hendricks was also killed in the line of duty. He was killed by a drunk driver. Dusty also left one child, Lana at the age of 2. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God bless you.

I just wanted to thank Roy, Shelly, and Justin for all of the times they helped Molly and I to survive. They lifted my spirits making us a part of their family. We moved to Winnsboro after my divorce and they never let me feel alone. They helped me support Molly when money was tight, moral was low, and when confidence was sinking. They truly are amazing people who never asked anything in return. I will love Roy forever cherishing our special memories. Shelly and Justin I will always only be a call away. I Love You. You are a sister to me. You are in my Prayers Daily.

I wanted to tell each and every one of you that have left a reflection that I appreciate them. I have read them everyday and my heart swells with pride. My husband was a GREAT man. He was wonderful with our son, the best husband anyone could ask for, and truly dedicated to his job. He would leave home after a 12 hour shift to go help out if he thought the boys needed him. He was excellent. I cannot tell you how much Justin and I will miss him. My heart feels empty. As you may have already figured out, I am still in shock and keep praying that he will come through the door any minute. For those of you that were with him when he died, THANK YOU. That is why I chose you to be his pallbearers. Who better to lay him to rest than the deputies that were with him when he died. I love each and every one of you for all that you have done. Words cannot express my appreciation. Remember that we are all grieving together. I will be here for you and I know that you will be there for us. His funeral was beautiful. He would have been so pleased at the number of law enforcement officers there. He was so humble that he would have said, "Is all of this for me"?
Thank you again.....

Upon the markers of their graves
Our heroes etched in names we save
For all the life they gave with pride
To keep the peace within life's stride

To honor serve and do their best
To keep us safe through any quest
They gave up what was theirs to share
Their spirits shall be always near

No fear within the hearts and minds
To keep us safe within our times
The glory that is ours to see
Those special hearts of bravery

They have walked where no man dare
Their lives in danger with no care
For they have given all they could
For their courage we have stood

In awe of every one who gave
His life for others who they saved
So we will know their contribution
Their firm resolve and resolution

For those they left with hearts so broken
In every whispered word that's spoken
We bow our heads in confirmation
In every word life's revelation

Those who stand within their shoes
Will follow courage as they choose
And give to all the best they had
They carry on with spirits glad

We will know that they walked through
With colors bright and hearts so true
No Island stands alone they say
For heroes they are born this way

Protecting those with loyalty
A glimpse of so much royalty
Within the years of courage bound
These officers have earned their crown

Upon the earth we shall remember
The special goals and all their thunder
That proves a hero came our way
Who left their hearts on earth to stay.

My sincere sympathy goes out to the Gonzalez family and to the Franklin Parish Sheriff's office. I have prayed for all of you daily and continue to have you all on my mind. I understand your pain and grief, we are coming up on a year since the loss of our son and we still can't make sense out of a senseless act of evil. Please know that I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead.

Words can't reflect what a treasure that the people here in Franklin Parish lost. Roy always went that extra mile no matter what was happening and you could always count on a smile. He was the first to answer a call no matter what it was or how far he had to go. Friday he answered the greatest call of all, he went home to be with the Lord.

Roy just wanted you to know that I'm proud to call you friend. Hope to walk with you on those street of gold that you now get to patrol.
