Reflections for Senior Investigator Thomas M. O'Neill
Tom worked for me for some time at the old Islip station following his transfer from the Long Island State Parkway PD. 1/1/1980. He was a good cop and above all a gentleman, liked by all that knew him.

Today is 5 years since you were taken from us so abruptly on this day July 6,2005. As I think about all that has happened in our family since then, births, weddings, graduations, all without you, it makes my heart ache. You were the one who all the kids looked up to and loved. And You loved them all unconditionally. Not a day goes by that I don't of you. Until we meet again....

As I returned from my grandson's soccer game, all the memories of you and your devotion to your nieces and nephews came flooding back . Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and miss you. You were a caring, loving uncle and as Brianna's wedding approaches and I realize you won't be there, it leaves a void that will never be filled. Until we meet again, I love you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As I was visiting the ODMP today, July 6, I came upon your name. I offer my belated condolences to your family, and to all those whose lives you touched.
My brother was a member of the NYS Police too. He was a Trooper stationed with Troop T out of the Tarrytown Barracks near the Tappan Zee Bridge. He also was lost in the performance of his duty on this exact date in 1961 at the age of 29 after serving for only 3 1/2 years. He was very proud to be a part of such a fine and dedicated organization as the NYS Police.
I will include you from this day forward in my prayers and I will never forget your sacrifice in protecting and serving your community.
May God's perpetual light shine upon the soul of Investigator Thomas M. O'Neill and may he rest in His eternal peace.
May God bless your family as you watch over them from above.
With my deepest sympathy.

I think of you today Officer O'Neill. Thank you for you service and your ultimate sacrifice. No one understands this profound loss unless you have faced it. Although some may think that because one year has passed, some healing has begun. On the contrary, only the numbness subsides.
Mrs. O'Neill, I hope that these reflections will help you through the coming days, weeks, and months. Your husband will always be remembered and honored...even by those of us who have never met him.
God Bless You...

Rest in Peace, Brother. Know forever that you are a hero! Through your many years of service, you have touched countless lives- directly and indirectly. As you accept your eternal post in Heaven, stand tall. You have earned your place alongside all of the warriors of justice who have been called before you. Keep watch over your family as they prepare for their first Holidays without you here. Let them find comfort in knowing that you are still with them and will protect them from above. Watch, too, over your family of blue and keep them safe. May you have everlasting peace. Godspeed!
