Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ortiz

Jerry, I road in the 2011 Police Untiy Tour in your honor. We rode a total of 250 miles over four days. We started in Somerset, New Jersey, and ended at the Police Memorial in Washington D.C. To honor the fallen police and fire who gave there all on 9/11, we rode to Ground Zero. The entire ride was amazing. The entire experience was amazing, and I plan to ride every year to honor all law enforcement personnel who have paid the ultimate price. The Police Unity Tour has a motto that reads; "WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED." It was an honor to ride in your name. I know your were watching over me throughout the entire ride. Thanks and keep watching over us. Al

Touched by An Angel

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

From a Dep who took a moment to pass through the area. I was overwhelmed at the turnout. LKD obviously lost a giant that day. May he rest in peace. We'll take it from here.

On the 5th anniversary of Deputy Ortiz's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Deputy Ortiz is not forgotten.

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet dragonflies in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am in your thoughts and heart forever.

You will always live in our hearts. Continue to watch over Chela, the boys and your family..

Jerry, I can't believe it is going to be five years since you were taken from your loved ones. Sometimes it feels like yesterday when we were driving to Starbucks to meet up with everyone. You are missed.

When a person you love passes away
Look to the night sky on a clear day.
The star that to you, appears to be bright,
Will be your loved one,
Looking upon you during the night.
The lights of heaven are what shows through
As your loved one watches all that you do.
When you feel lonely for the one that you love,
Look to the Heavens in the night sky above.

If I should ever leave you whom I love
To go along the Silent Way,
Grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears,
But laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you there.

(I'd come - I'd come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?)

And when you hear a song
Or see a bird I loved,
Please do not let the thought of me be sad...
For I am loving you just as I always have...
You were so good to me!

There are so many things I wanted still to do -
So many things to say to you...
Remember that I did not fear...
It was just leaving you that was so hard to face...
We cannot see Beyond...
But this I know:
I love you so -
'twas heaven here with you!
