As one who grew up in Laurel, MD I would like to thank Cpl. Gaughan for the many years that he protected the streets and homes of my neighborhoods. I may have never had any direct contact with you, but you no doubt had an indirect influence in my life as you watched over the city and county I grew up in. For this I thank you and your family. Our Greatest Fear

Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again, I hold back a tear.
They patrol in the state, city, county and town,
in uniforms colored white, green, blue and brown.
The shape of their badges may vary,
but it’s a symbol that they all, proudly carry.
They leave for work with a kiss goodbye,
but some don’t come home, no matter how hard they try.
To uphold the law is the job that they pick,
with such high aspirations, why must some die so quick?
They leave behind loved ones, family and friends,
after their lives have met tragic ends.
Some die in crashes, others hearts not too stout,
to many have been lost when gunshots ring out.
Our Heavenly Father has called them home,
no more these dark streets do they roam.
Through trial and error they have given their best,
please Lord, now grant them eternal rest.
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.

I live in northern Virginia and was watching the news as this story was unfolding. I prayed that God would give this officer a second chance and make him survive. I'll never understand the whys that allow these situations to take the lives of those who were only looking to serve and protect. My deepest condolences to his wife, son, daughter, extended family, friends and fellow officers. I will pray that God will grant Corporal Gaughan eternal peace and give his family the strength and courage to cope during this life altering tragedy. God's blessings on all of you and know that all of us surviving family members share in your heartache and will remember and honor your sacrifice.

Steve, I know that you are now living on the promises of the Word, "to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord". You were not only a real cop, but a warrior as well, and you did what was ever necessary to complete the job. It was great to have served with you in the academy (Session 73), District VI, and part time as well. You will be truly missed by those whose lives that you touched at work, home, and church.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS. Steve was a member of our men's league for many years before embarking upon his career in law enforcement. "Peanut" as he was affectionately known; was a wide receiver and was one of the fastest men in our league. He won several awards in his love for this game; and will be sorely missed by all who enjoyed his ability and friendship. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, his brothers Mike and Bill and all he has left behind. There wasn't a time in all the years we knew him that he not had a smile upon his face or a kind word for his leaguemates. we embraced Steve as a brother as I know many of you also did. Another brave man away from earth. At least he died doing what he loved to do, and now he is being fitted for his gear in heaven. His cover has been replaced by a Halo, his duty belt replaced by Wings, and finally his pistol replaced by a Bow and Gods own Arrows of Righteousness. Here in Southern Maryland PG County is known as the "Wild West" , a tough beat and getting tougher every year. We need men like Cpl. Gaughan now more than ever...Knowing that his sacrifice will never be forgotten, will not lessen the pain of his loss, but we all know that there is one more Gaurdian Angel manning a post in heaven tonight....
