Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Ronald Wayne Ives

Just thinking of you Ron.

December 9, 2004

Dear Ron,

It is time for the Christmas lights in the neighborhood and I will miss you coming up to our home and sharing a cup of hot chocolate with you by the fire pit in the driveway. The stories and laughs we would share made the holiday season that much more fun and memorable.

Miss you.

December 7, 2004

Ron, it has taken me along time to leave you this reflection. I was working at my regular job when I heard the tragic news. I just pulled to the side of the road and was beside myself. I have many friends and acquaintances at the department, but I can honestly say you were a role model to me.

I remember when I wanted to get some wrought iron work done at my house you came up to me and volunteered your services to me. At that time you really did not know me other than by name only. I remember you stopped by my house and were smiling ear to ear. You were a complete gentleman to my family. You were very professional at everything you did.

You will be terribly missed by all including myself.

Thank you for being you!!!!

your fraternal brother forever,

Hi Deputy Ives,

We only just recently learned about this website when our son lost his Deputy partner on a code call. Now we check it daily and write to each one of you as often as we can.

What a wonderful man you are and I am sure you are aware of the loving, caring letters that appear in your reflections.

It's tough down here on the streets of earth and we still need your guidance over us from above. Please pray for us as we will continue to pray for all your loved ones. Someday we will meet and be able to thank you personally for your ultimate sacrifice.

You are in our thoughts daily. We love you.

Ronald Wayne Ives
Obituary

By Richard Ives (Brother)

Ronald Wayne Ives, age 43, was killed on Wednesday, September 1, 2004. As a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy on Motorcycle Patrol Duty, Ron was struck by a Ford Explorer that ran a red light at the corner of Archibald Avenue and Baseline Road in Rancho Cucamonga. Visitors will be welcomed to the viewing at Drapers Mortuary at 811 N. Mountain Avenue in Ontario, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 7, 2004. Memorial Services will be held at The Epicenter (Quakes Stadium), 8408 Rochester Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Ron’s name to the Officer Down Memorial Page, (www.ODMP.org), PO Box 184, Oakton, VA 22124.

Ron, who resided in Upland, was born on June 25, 1961, in Bellflower, California. He graduated from Chaffey High School in 1979. Ron had early careers in the grocery and vending industries until his creative endeavors took him into metal fabrication where he became an expert welder, for the assembly of Tow-Trucks and eventually Fire-Trucks. Ron rose to become a shop foreman, and for a time ran his own Tow-Truck assembly business.

Ron had a strong desire to perform Public Service which led to his joining the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at the age of 35, and served as the speaker for his Academy Class. As a Deputy, Ron served in the jail, in a Radio Patrol Car, in Bicycle Patrol, and then as a Motorcycle Patrol Officer. He gave bicycle safety presentations at local elementary schools and helped with DARE activities. His creative spirit, and his fabrication skills came in handy when he manufactured custom mounts for the equipment used by himself and other Motorcycle Officers in the performance of their duties.

Ron was the brother with all of the charm, he approached life with a smile and an irrepressible attitude of looking for the best in everyone he met. He had the innate ability to make friends in almost every group within which he found himself. Ron had such a generous and easy going nature, that it perplexed his sibling to see him as an authority figure upon his entrance into the Sheriff’s Department. But Ron’s affable nature became a source of strength, and a valuable tool while carrying out his duties as a Deputy. Ron had a deep sense of mission for charitable endeavors, and in August of 2002 organized and participated in a 4,000 mile cross-continent bicycle ride (partrioddaybiketour.com) of Deputies and Fire-Fighters to raise awareness for the Officer Down Memorial Page, and for the families of the victims of the attack on the World Trade Towers of September 11, 2001.

Ron would probably define himself as a person striving to be a good Christian Soul. His Christian Faith was an integral part of his life and character. Much of his life was spend by introducing the less fortunate to his faith, and encouraging them to establish that faith as a foundation toward building better lives for themselves. He knew no bounds with regard to race, economic circumstances, previous gang activity, or level of sobriety, when it came to rescuing such souls.

Ron was an adventurous soul, unafraid to explore new things, or to take on new challenges. To the last, he maintained a sense of forgiveness and compassion for all. Most would do well to aspire to the inspirational example of his character. He will be sorely missed!

Ron is survived by: his wife Karen; his son Blake; his mother Sandra; his father Richard; Step-father Glynn; his brothers Richard and David; his sisters Eileen, Sharon, and Elizabeth. Ron is most profoundly survived by the countless relatives, friends, and associates whose lives he touched in so many ways.

I knew Ron for almost 10 years. I feel so empty now. I will always remember the smile on his face, and the joy in his heart. He loved that Bike so much. He was so proud of all that He was doing in his police work. Not only for His community, but for the others He worked with. I will miss you more than you know. The phone rings and it will never be that voice of joy, that was happy for every day God granted him. I used to tell Him "be careful" He would respond, "I'm always careful, It's the other people you have to worry about." Worry no more, for my best friend, you are where we all long to be someday. Home with our Lord. I will see you again. Until then you are with me every where I go. May your Peace be deep Ron.

They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you...
They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few.
Like men of steel, on Silver Wings, they sparkle in the light...
then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.

Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again...
You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind.
Side by side, they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound...
And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.

So if you see one riding, and you look into his face...
You see your reflection in his eyes, you know that you are safe.
For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind...
And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen ones ride again.

May Gods Blessings be with you our fallen Brother, and with your family and all the Law Enforcement Brothers and Sisters whom pray for you, and shed tears as you brought sunshine into there lifes daily, may you know the Lord and all the Firefighters and EMS personel whom pray for you in heaven and for your family, may The Lord our God give them strength to carry on in there time of great loss.
We all love you our brother.

I knew Ron many years ago when first met his wife and his Savior, where he laid down his old life and took up a new. It is obvious that this life he led was pleasing to God, he loved like Jesus loved and the fruit of that love will be eternal.

Ron, you are in the presence of the Almighty and join in with the hosts of heaven giving honor to the One whose example you emulated in an earthly life cut short. You showed that being a friend of God is it's own reward.

John 15
12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last.

1 John 3
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence

Ron,
What can I say, your passing has touched me deeply. I had the great fortune of watching our careers mirror each other, 3 years jail time and 5 years at Rancho Cucamonga station on patrol. You were a model Deputy, a shining star at our department. You were always the first to lend a helping hand or go through a door in an emergency. Your intregrity was above reproach and you seemed to never have a bad day. Your smile will always be a lasting memory at our station.

You always said and your brother reminded us,"I'm a motor in Rancho, I get to meet people and get their autographs" how bad could it be.

I will always remember you and will do everything I can to make sure that deputies that come after you will remember also.

You always did it right and if we as a department could emulate your performance, we will be the stronger for it.

Our prayers are with you and your Family.

Your Brother,
Gary

Dear Ron

I can't beleive you're gone and I'm never going to see your smiling face or hear your happy voicel. You were one of the first deputies I connected with when I started working at the Rancho station. I was so proud of you riding your bike all the way to New York City to commorate the World Trade Center Disaster. I cannot say how I felt watching your progress dail and feeling the pride of knowing such a wonderful individual...I just wish I had know you and your family better.

Remember the time when I asked for a deputy's assistance and you called me asking what I needed. I told you I was just asking for help with a customer who wanted her traffic citation signed off. You were so cute saying that you'd love to help me but you were in the locker room, not dressed. I laughed and told you that was more than I needed to know. For weeks, when we passed each other in the hall, I would look away and you would blush and then we would both laugh. How funny you are and what a pleasure you are to know.

May God bless you and your family always.

You should have seen the awsome mourning bands the Rancho Fire Department made for you - you'd be impressed, "Stop it! All this for me?"
As soon as it seems our wounds are starting to heal, a memory of flashes by. We all have a story about you and wish you were still with us. I cannot come to this site w/o shedding a few ounces of tears -- it just does not seem fair that you're physically gone. As time heals our wound I am sure we will feel better, it just seems like yesterday that you left us. When times seem rough, we just think of you and a smile grows across our face. We will take your brother's advise, take a little bit of you, apply it to our lives and grow much stronger. You are sorely missed and constantly in our thoughts.
