Reflections for Patrolman Gilbert D. Benitez

Hi Uncle Gilbert this is your nephew Michael . I regret so much that I never could remember meeting or knowing you since you were killed only days before my first birthday. My Dad Johnny, who was your brother-in-law and good friend when y'all were in the Navy together, told me once that I have your personality, which makes me proud since you died a hero protecting our city. Hopefully I'll meet you in Heaven soon.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 50th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

You gave your life less than a month after I was born. It's so sad to see a young public servant pay the ultimate sacrifice. Rest in Peace my Brother.
You are not forgotten now that I have found you.
