Johnny Greer was my grandfather. My mother winnie Greer Fore mourned her father all her life. She died 01-22-1980 in Brady Tx.
I researched the family line and grandfather Greer's ancestors can be traced back to the Reveoloution War.
The Greers were a tall, strong, dark hair and dark eyed pioneers. They started out in Tennesse and Kentucky.
These people were afraid of nothing. And according to my mother that was her father's downfall.
He rode into the out of line prisoners and that is what they wanted him to do. He was jumped and stabbed. Mother said he lived a full day before dying from his over 100 stab wounds. She said the guards shot down some of them. However, it was very foggy and some got further away and were hunted down and shot by Texas Rangers resisting arrest.
He left behind a wife, one living son, one deceased son, and 4 daughters. My grandmother struggled greatly to raise the children alone.Eventually she married Ben Anderson.
My husband Scott is a federal prison guard. There is not a shift gone by that I don't know somewhere deep within, that it can happen. We pray it doesn't.
Thank you for remembering my grandfather.
Sincerely, Frankie Diane Fore
