Chaney,
It is hard to believe that it is seven years since you went home to Jesus. It seems as it was yesterday that you were here cutting up with the family.
We miss you soooooo much. Your brother is still having a hard time coping with you not being here. I don't think that it gets any better as the years go by.... I know that we all will see you again... I love you and miss you very much.
Love,

I can't beleive how time has gone by. I can still hear Scott's voice on the other end of the phone. He couldn't even say you and Woody's names. He will never let himself be close to another coworker like he was with you. We really miss you. Thank you for watching over him everyday he puts that uniform on and does what so many love to do.

Its hard to believe its been 5 years. It seems like only yesterday you were making us all laugh with your jokes. You made our shifts bareable at LPDC. We were sad when you left for the detective division, but we knew that they were getting one of the best. You and Woody are thought of often. May you continue to watch over us all. May God Bless all those who were left behind until you meet again.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Chaney,
It has been 4 long years since you were called home. I still remember that day. I was the one who got rescue to the scene. To this day I still feel that I didn't do enough. I know deep in my heart that you were taken for a reason. Your loving wife needed you. You will be in my heart forever. You were a great person and officer. Wish I could have gotten to know you better. May god be with you and your family.

It has been 4 years since your EOW and I know that those that love you dearly have thought of you each and every day during the past 4 years. Continue to keep watch over that large family of yours. Stand at their sides and protect them. Also, keep watch over those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero and will never be forgotten.

To the family and loved ones of Sergeant Detective Chaney Champagne and his fellow officers with the LaFourche Sheriff's Department:

On this the third anniversary week of Chaney's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Chaney, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by family members and friends. Especially moving to me was the reflection left by his mother for I also lost my precious baby while the community lost a dedicated law enforcement officer. A big chunk of our hearts are missing when we lose a child...yet we have to try to remain strong for the rest of our family. Mother Champagne, I know your anquish.

Chaney's valor and courage will never be forgotten.

As a member of a family devoted to police service, Chaney must have made you all so proud with his professionalism and "lead by example" work ethic.

I am so sorry that Chaney was robbed of his life while trying to bring aid to another, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Chaney gave to his community and the citizens of Lousiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 31, 2003.
