Although this is the Holiday Season, I find it very difficult to be happy. This has been a devasting year for those of us at the Honolulu Police Department. Not only did we lose Ryan, but we also lost Glen and Patrick...

I just wanted you to know Ryan that you are still in our thoughts and your loss is felt every day by your family and friends. Rest in peace my friend...

Ryan,
I will always remember that you were probably the first officer I met, besides my FTO after I graduated from recruit school in '92. Through the years, you always would greet me with a warm "howzit". It was always great to see you in the Traffic Division Office, even though our assignments were different, you always took time to talk. You were the one who got me into researching other ways to earn a living, besides being special duty.

On the day you went down, I was called to the scene to help investigate and I was completely shocked to learn that it was you. While at the scene, I was told that you didn't make it, and I wanted to believe that it was a big mix-up and that you were in a hospital somewhere, trying to recover.

You will always be missed Ryan, rest in peace.

GOTO MAN, I was stunned to hear that you went down. I prayed to God that I was hearing wrong. But when the news was confirmed I could only feel disbelief. As the day wore on, I could only think back about the times that we rode together, or the times that you, C.J. Todd and the rest of B Squad would be at Gulick after peak. Those were some my best times in the detail. Like J.J. said, "One day we will ride together again", I too, believe that.

Ryan, I just want to say thank you for being a great friend.

As always, RIDE SOLO, RIDE HARD!

Braddah Ryan, my heart was saddend when I heard that you went down. I just spoke to you a couple of hours earlier and like always, you were in a good mood and always smiling. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dawn and Bowen and your family. I will miss you dearly and someday we will ride again. Until then my braddah, rest in peace. Ride Hard, Ride Solo, 3837.

Ryan.............remember when we were working together and we were on our way to a "hot call". I went one way and you went another and I told you I'll see you there?. I got there and you got into an accident on the way and you began calling for help on the radio and you called my name, I answered you and said "hang in there Ryan, were comming to help you".....and we did. Well we went different way's again, this time I'm calling you.............can you hear me Ryan. God Bless you my brother.

It sounds like thunder far away, but the skies are blue and bright..And soon they crest the hill nearby, and ride into our sight. They shake the ground with powerful sound, and they make some hearts beat fast.. They look so proud and noble, like knights come from the past.
Side by side, they always ride, and seem to move as one.. From early in the morning light, to the setting of the sun. And children point and wave to them, from cars that pass them by.. And young ones ask their parents, why the men have mirrors for eyes.
They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you.. They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few. Like men of steel, on silver wings, they sparkle in the light.. then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.
Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again.. You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind. Side by side they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound.. And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.
So if you see one riding, and you look into his face.. You see your reflection in his eyes, you know that you are safe. For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind.. And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen one rides again.

Rest in Peace my Brother

As an LEO wife, my thoughts and prayers are with Officer Goto's family right now. My husband and I lost a friend of 15 years in March 2003 to a motorcycle accident, and it was the most difficult time imaginable. We are praying for the family as well as Officer's Goto's Department right now.

I am so very saddened to hear of the death of this fine young officer. Such an untimely tragedy. This sadly reinforces the fact that motor vehicles continue to be the number one killer of police officers. We in the family of the badge are all grieved by this terrible loss, because we all are brothers and sisters, regardless of where we work and what badge we may wear.

I pray for his family, friends and colleagues. He now patrols a beat in Heaven with St. Michael. God Bless and be safe out there.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Ryan did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Ryan be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Goto's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his fiancee. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Ryan is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Ryan was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!
