Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Gerald Kieffer Griffin, Jr.

Jerry,
I just found this reflection site and wanted to leave a note.
When I heard the news of what had happen to you, needless to say I was as shocked as everyone else.
It was always a blast to hang around you. You made everyone laugh and always had a smile on your face.
May GOD watch over your daughter and may you REST IN PEACE.

Gerry,

We have never met, although from everything I hear I wish we had. I went to school with your daughter and we subsequently became good friends. She's a wonderful person with an amazing heart, which I'm sure is a direct legacy from you. I know you're proud of her, and she will always honor you memory.

Thank you for your service, and may you rest in peace.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Jerry,

Just wanted to let you know how much you are missed. T.C. and I still talk about you. Remember all those perfromances of "A Christmas Carol" the squad went to? And how about you organizing my promotion party w/Rikki.

Well buddy, keep them laughing and smiling in heaven. Say a few good words for Mary. She's ill and needs your help. If she doesn't recover, welcome her in heaven.

Happy Birthday Jerry-

Who can say for certain
Maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me
Your memories so clear

Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You're still an inspiration
You are watching over me

Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing
All power can't be seen

As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me
Each and every day
And I believe
That angels breathe
And that you will live on
And never leave

xoxo

To the family and friends of Officer Gerald Griffin Jr. and his fellow officers, and most especially to Officer Gerry Griffin:

In reading the reflections about Gerry, it is obvious he was a much loved and well-respected man, one who truly deserves the title hero. I wish I had the honor to have met him, but the essence of him lives on through the memories so lovingly recounted in the reflections. It sounds as if he lived life to the fullest and had a great spirit. I loved hearing the roll call story. What a sight that must have been.

On behalf of our entire family, we extend our sincerest condolences for the grievous loss you suffered when he was tragically killed two years. Ashley, I know that you will continue to be cared for by his friends in the law enforcement community.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of service Officer Griffin gave to his community as a police officer, and to his country through his Secret Service employment, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 25, 2003.

Jerry, I was stunned to hear the sad news of your passing almost a year after the fact. You were one of the funniest guys I ever knew. I was sorry to see you leave the Secret Service all those years ago, but I knew that you were a beach bum at heart like me! I have to tell everyone my best memory of you which I still tell people to this day. We had only been assigned to the White House for a few months. No one really likes the assignment so we all found ways to amuse ourselves. Jerry was one of the best at this. One morning, about ten minutes before roll call, Jerry emerged from the locker room into the roll call room dressed ONLY in his uniform hat, gun belt with his favorite 8" Colt Python instead of his service revolver, SMALL bikini briefs and black leather shoes with knee high black socks! With hands on hips and showing off that cut torso and that sly Jerry grin, he threw up a crisp salute and announced to everyone that he was reporting for duty. Man, that whole room laughed for the rest of the day. Even the watch commander had to let go with a laugh. I really miss those days with you and the rest of my class mates. Jerry, you and I were definitely part of the greatest recruit class in the history of the Uniformed Division. May God keep you safe with him, but please, don't keep him laughing for too long....He's a busy guy! We love & miss ya Jer.
