Tommy,
I was getting ready for Turkey season, as I placed my camo jacket on I looked at the name tag it read Newman. I remembered the night you gave me the jacket and the promise to hook-up and hunt on your property.
Missed but never forgotten.

detective newman...was driving through b-more about a week or two ago and immediately, your image came to mind. i said a little prayer for you and your children. but then, i decided that today was a good day to let you know that you are thought of. i wish that i could tell you that the streets have gotten better. its rough out here...but we continue to "hold it down" for the innocent and for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. know that you are always thought of and i'm gonna look you up when i get to heaven so that we can be formally introduced. rest easy my brother in blue.

Tommy,I remember when you came to the District, brand new from the academy. I remember the times we conversed outside and in passing in the hallways. Who knew then that the little things you remember now would be cherished memeories. I was floored when I heard the news of your passing, and to this day still find it hard to comprehend.Keep up safe from above till we meet on the beat again in his house.

Tommy, I wanted you to know I have not forgotten you. You were a great cop and when I was in narcotics in the City, I really respected you. I am still haunted by your death. I can't forget our last conversation-I didn't know it would be the last time we spoke, and I am sorry for that. I pray for your kids. I am so sorry you're gone. Thank you for doing your job-you gave all you had to give.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Detective Newman...I thought of you today and I had to stop by to say hello. It's true that we have never met (as I have mentioned in the past), but something draws my thoughts to you. And when I think of you, I immediately say a prayer not only for you, but for your children. Rest in peace. Until next time...
