Reflections for Sergeant Anthony Scott Futrell

Scott and Bob were very good friends of mine and you are sorely missed! We never did get to fly those cadets and "hold the CAP plane hostage" so that we could fly all our cadets! Now you are flying higher than you ever expected to do! So keep those Angels straight and keep your wings pointed to the sky.

The hardest thing I have ever had to do was to visit your wives and tell them you had flown to be with angels in heaven and would not be returning home to them.

But I consider it an honor to have been asked to make that very special trip to your homes with our Wing Chaplain Wayne Gibson. That was the saddest day in my life.
Remembering our last meeting at Wing and the lunch we shared together planning the kidnapping of the CAP plane!

I lost 2 BEST FRIENDS that day! But some good came out of you loosing your lives I was in the right place to save 5 FIVE lives returning from Boone on the Saturday so Scott and Bob your passing was not in vane. Had you both not died my cadets and I would not have been able to save those 3 children and 2 adults that day.

I miss you both and want you to know you touched my life in many ways and now I have spent 10 years of my life finishing what you both started and I haven't done yet!

Fly High my friends I love you both!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the eighth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state and the birthplace of my son. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you for I know that both the pain and pride are forever.

Scott,
Back from overseas again and have picked up on SWAT training like we use to do. I'm doing an Advanced Ccourse soon with one of our most trained teams and will again have a chance to tell some Scott stories. Come to think of it Scott, between going to college together, backpacking and training, we spent many days together. Love you and miss you brother

I want to thank you Scott for being the tough instructor while I was in the academy. You were hard on us, but a true professional. I remember several conversations with you and knew were a great role model. I wanted to also thank you for saving my life that day on the job years later. I think about your sacrifice and thank you for your mentorship. We all miss you.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Sergeant Futrell,
Today is the fifth anniversary of your EOW. My thoughts are with your family and friends as they remember you today and always.

You will never be forgotten brother. Your were a great police officer and supervisor. You were always so serious, but it didn't take much for you to break into an infectious smile. I remember you when you first got hired by the Mecklenburg County Police. I was one of you supervisors and you were always so professional in your appearance and the way you conducted yourself. I remember when you played the part of a Dallas Police Officer for a made for t.v. movie filmed in Charlotte. You had so many talents. Most of all, you were a good friend. God bless your family.

I met Scott while on the County Police. He was what any good squared away cop wanted to emulate. He was the cop to be like. He was tough, but had a good heart. He was sure of every decision he ever made, and most of them were correct. I left the department in 1997 after nearly 7 years of service. Scott was one of the guys I missed running into. Scott was killed just a few days before I remarried, incidentally to another officer, so I didn't get to attend his funeral. I regret that. My wife understands, being that she is an officer also. A toast was made in his honor on my wedding night, and as a result of that toast and Scott's memory, I decided to re-up with the police department. God Bless you Scott and Rest in Peace. You are missed.

Rest in Peace... never forgotten

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said.
"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint."
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"
There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman.
You've borne you burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell"

I had the honor to know Scott since 1987 when he joined the force. I remember going to many calls with him during our County Police tenure. I always knew I was in good company and had a person I could rely on when things got bad. Assignments led us in different directions, but the occasional chance meeting was always welcome.
Scott was the epitome of a good cop. Tough and strong, while caring and helpful; serious and dedicated but still having a great sense of humor. His time with the 82nd Airborne was obviously a positive influence on him that he carried into the law enforcement community. Memories of our friendly bickerings about the 82nd (him) and 101st (me) still bring a smile to my face.

We lost a great man on that day, but in truth, he is still among us now and forever.

Airborne all the way Scott!!!

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

Thoughts go out to the family and friends

Husband of a RCMP member. ( Royal Canadian Mounted Police )

We cops in NC are going to pay solemn respect to our fallen brothers and sisters of the badge this Friday at the Annual Peace Officer's Memorial Day Ceremony, held in Charlotte this year.

I attended the funereal of my friend, Boone PD MAJ Bob Kennedy, in neighboring Watauga County. Due to time and distance constraints, I could not attend the funeral of this fine sergeant, but at Bob's service we paid our respects and grieved for the loss of three brave men, not just one.

This veteran officer now patrols the streets of Heaven with St..Michael. I appreciate his many years of service to the Queen City and I pray for his family, friends and colleagues.

God Bless and be safe.

May God bless Sgt. Futrell's family. Scott recruited me to CMPD and was not only an outstanding officer, trainer, and individual, but a huge asset and inspiration for all officers who entered the profession of law enforcement. He was the definition of "High Speed". Rest in peace. You are in a better place Brother.
