Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Candace Renee Ripp

I’ve heard a lot about you, even from my dad. Thinking about you tonight for some reason. My child is due on the anniversary of your death, could you say it’s a sign? I’ll raise them to be someone like you.

The motor vehicle accident call that took Candace’s life was initially given to another officer, but she told that officer to disregard and she volunteered to work the accident in rainy conditions.

MNPD Officer Candace Ripp was the first female police officer to die in the line of duty in the history of Nashville.

Candace & I attended the police academy together. She was tough, intelligent, brave, and beautiful. Candace was attending law school at the time of her death.

I always say a prayer for Candace’s family this time of year, but especially this year, the 20th anniversary of her death. I hope you’ll say a prayer too. “Lest We Forget.”

I learned today (May 31st at 2am) that you are my paternal 1st cousin. Your mother, Gyna (a word to you below), is the step sister of my dad, Frankie Gene Byrd (b:1936). No one in my family ever knew John Franklin Byrd was my biological grandfather. I learned my 1st cousin was an exceptional woman! She was a brave police officer. A woman demanding her respect; I know the Byrd tenacity, so I know you did. I am proud to have your brave soul as my cousin! I love you!

Gyna, I would love to talk to you. You can find me on Ancestry. Please reach out.

16 years ago today I joined the Hole in the Heart Club. 16 is just a number that means nothing to us. We miss you so much.

Yesterday we lost another MNPD Officer and it brought back a lot of memories of when we lost you. I have driven down Ellington Parkway a thousand times since that day and have thought about you every single time.

I just noticed it was the 29th of April and then remembered it was your birthday. You left an impression on many that has not faded after all these years, and I am one of those who will never forget you. You will always be my sister in blue.

Happy Birthday, in 7 more minutes it will be your 51st birthday. Seems like it just gets harder and harder instead of better. Love you, my Baby Girl.

Laurel is soooooooooo right, sometimes we turn to each other and say, yep, Candy's right here with us in those girls. Claire's athleticism is like looking at you on the basketball court or softball field all over again. And Truleigh has that ATTITUDE and DETERMINATION that comes straight from you.

Miss you every day but today is tough. Love, Mother

Missing you....I see you in my daughters, when Truleigh gets that "Ripp"look or in Claire's drive and determination. I hate that they don't have you in their lives. I love you sissy!

I was passing this stretch of highway today and wondered who you were. Someone was thoughtful enough to post a memorial sign in your honor. Very Kind. I am sorry the loss your fellow officers, Daughter and Granddaughter had to experience in a life without you. Thank you for your service

I think about that day and wonder why you took that call. I was dispatched, but you took it. I think about you often and miss you. I am sure you would never have believed it but I am married now with 2 wonderful kids.

Not sure if I am related to your family or not. Just conducted a search of my last name and couldn't help writing. First of all, I want to thank you for your service and my heart goes out to your loved ones.

Well, Sissy, you have a new nephew - he came here almost grown at 9 lbs. 10 ozs - Norris Franklin Ripp. What a cutie he is. You would love playing feet to feet with him just like you did with Preston and Joseph.

Miss you, Babe, more than words can say.
