When I got to ESU in 1999 Vinny was my training officer and when his partner transferred out to ESU K-9 I became stesdy partners w/ Vinny. He was one of the most knowledgeable members of ESU in tactical and rescue situations as well as an NYPD sniper team member veteran of the USMC and a member of the Coast Guard reserve. Vinny was supposed to be working a 4x12 on 9/11 but switched onto a day tour to attend operating enginering school at night for the betterment of his family life and as a further asset to ESU. Please take time to visit Vinny and other members of the NYPD as well as all the members resting on the wall. Thank You Ray Flood NYPD ESU

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Vinny:
This reflection to you, serves two purposes: one, you deserve this, and many more. Second, because I made a promise to each of you who gave all that horrible day, that I would write a reflection to each and every one of you. That's the least a brother can do.
What you did on 11 September 2001, is so typical of a hero...always thinking of others before himself. And that, Vinny, is what you are...a hero. I don't know any other group of people who would so willingly sacrifice their life for another, except police and firefighters. I am so PROUD to be among you all, for we are America's soldiers at home. The first and last line of defense to protect our countrymen from animals like the terrorists.
Although you are not here to be seen or talk to, I am certain that you are looking down on the rest of us from a better place, smiling in the knowledge that you saved so many more people. Unfortunately, some of our countrymen have come to forget the sacrifice, the dedication, the professionalism you all demonstrated that day. But so help me God, as long as I live on this earth, I WILL remind people that freedom comes at a great price, home and abroad.
We live in the greatest country in world, because of people such as yourself, willingly to do whatever it takes to protect our countrymen, and our way of life. Although the blue line is a little thinner, we have held. Rest in peace, we have the watch. Amen
