I would like to share this story as we move toward 11, September 2008. Mike and I grew up together, joined the Marine Corps together, and both became Police Officer's. He was alway's a true friend and role model. Recently I had occasion to meet a Nassau County Detective who noticed I was wearing one of my many Mike Curtin shirts that I wear regularly. This Detective noticed the Marine Corps Emblem and Mike's name, and we got to talking. I began to tell him how I grew up with Mike, as I'm proud to have had that privilege. This Detective looked at me and Said "Mike was my First Sgt. in the Marine Corps and He's the reason I became a Police Officer". The sincerity in his voice and face was overwhelming to me. We plan to meet again and share some Mike Curtin stories, as we know there are many of them. Mike has set the example for many and he continues to do so. Mike has become a part of History and His accomplishment's are being taught to New recruits at Marine Corps Boot Camp. Mike was the Amazing person as are His Wife Helga and the Girl's as Mike called them. Semper Fi Mike

I did'nt have the honor to meet you in person, but my father worked up in the squad in the 113. There were many things told to me of you. Most of all I like to think you are a Guardian Angel. Someone who knew the family, and knows the job. I had been avoiding going to the wall for sometime to talk to you. I finally got there the other day. I saw your name and etched it on several pieces of paper and sent them home. You and I both know what was said while I was there. Thank You for listening, and watching. Now it is my turn to take the watch. Good bye Sergeant I will see you when I get there.

I served under Michael in the US Marines at NWS Earle in the 80's. Mike was then a Staff Sgt and my Platoon leader. Mike was a Marines "Marine" --- he accepted nothing less then the best and pushed you beyond the extreme. I was in awe of him, and quite frankly scared as hell to cross him. He taught me, Leadership, what it was to be a Marine and a Man and how and when to show a caring compassion mixed with respect and discipline. You were one of a kind Mike, tough as nails and when you though nobody was looking I saw a glimpse of the family man with love and compassion. You taught me so much and had sucn an impact on the man I would become. I am grateful and a richer person for have known you... rest in peace my Brother ---Semper Fidelis -- Corporal Eric Braun USMC 1983-1988

After all these years, I still miss you. You still motivate me to be the best I can be. To be a leader and not a follower. To not be afraid to blaze a new trail when one is needed. To speak even if my voice shakes. You still motivate me to be strong and to move ahead even if the path is difficult. You motivate me to have faith in myself... when times get hard, your memory pushes me through. You will always live in my heart.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Mr. Curtin:

You have left behind a family beautiful beyond words. Your daughters are so strong, as I can only imagine your wife is as well. They love you and miss you, like I miss my dad, but we all know you're happy up there and that you are having a grand ol' time with each other. Heather and I will look out for each other, so don't you worry. Senior year is going to be hard to go through without you guys, but we'll make you both proud.

Dear Mike:
It is my privledge and honor to write a reflection to a man of such character. Whatever concepts people have had over the years of what a police officer is, you and all our brothers who died that horrible day, have changed a lot of folks opinion. They have come to realize what sacrifice we all are willing to make, if necessary.
There is no real way we the survivors of September 11, 2001, can ever repay you and everyone else for the enormous sacrifice that was so unselfishly given, save one:
that FOREVER, we as Americans, will remind generations to come, of what it means to live in a free society, and what sacrifices are made to achieve that end.
I am proud of you, Mike, for the manner in which you conducted yourself, keeping loyal to the oath you took...even at the cost of your life. You, Mike, are one of America's Finest, and always will be.
My prayer for you is that you know only peace and that our Heavenly Father keeps you close to his heart. As you and all the rest now sleep in the arms of the Lord, may your family, and the families of all who gave so much, know that they are now a part of all of us.
America has had many who qualify as a hero...and you certainly are one of them. God bless you, your family, police officers everywhere, and God bless America. Amen

To the family of Sgt. Michael Curtin..
Please know that his memory will always live on and that you are prayed for on a daily basis. I too, wear a mercy band with Sgt. Curtins name on it. It reminds me daily of the sacrifice he made on 9/11. I finally made it to NY last year and located Sgt. Curtains name on the memorial wall.
What a great honor it is to wear the band with his name on it.
Your law enforcement family is forever greatful for Sgt. Curtins ultimate sacrifice.
