Reflections for Police Officer Glen Pettit

Glens family and mine grew up a few houses away from each other so I can say I knew Glen from when he was a little kid I hang out with his older brother Tommy and I can remember being in front of his house on a summer night he always wanted to be outside with all of us even though he was much younger than us. He was always a good kid and grew into a great man. When he was taken on that day like all the others it changed the world as we all knew it.I will always remember him and his family.

I worked at Sayville Middle School and Tara, Glenn's sister was a teacher there. I came to know Tara and my children had met Glenn and spoke of his kindness. After his loss on 9/11 I purchased a memorial T-shirt with his police badge. I also had the honor of attending his memorial service in Ronkonkoma. His memory lingers on as I show his prayer card and wear his shirt when our school remembers what we call "First Responders Day". I tell of his sacrifice and we often discuss what being a "hero" is. Needless to say they are fasinated and in awe of Glenn. I wanted to let his family know that his dedication to his job and the ultimate sacrifice continue to "make a difference" even all the way down here in Cypress, Texas. His memory and legacy will continue as long as I teach school and discuss freedom and the price some, like Glenn, are willing to pay. God Bless his family and friends today and everyday!

I knew Glen in highschool and only found out today about his death. I cried when I read the article in todays paper about his mother and families efforts to remember him. But I smile when I think of all the fun I had with him. Thank you for your bravery.

POLICE OFFICER
ORLANDO PD
July 6, 2008

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I discovered a $20 dollar bill with this officer's information on it, and the words "Never Forget". I scanned it and posted it on flicker:

Can't post the link, but check the flickr tags: for NYC, WTC, Memorial, and Police Officer.

I thought who ever created this living memorial should know that it found its way to sunny Central California, and that some of us never *will* forget.

Dear Glen:
What can I say that has not been said already? Perhaps there is one thing: as a brother officer, I can say that although you gave your life, so many others were saved as a direct result of your bravery, and that of the others. Most people today, don't know, or don't care to know, what we the police are made of. They only know to dial "911", and get service.
But the manner in which you conducted yourself that horrible day, has opened some eyes. I don't know many people who would willingly run into a collapsing building and try to rescue others, but you did. The terrorists may have taken you from us, but in doing so, they have also immortalized you and all are other fellow officers who gave all that day.
If one were to use a dictionary and look up the word, "hero", it would, someday, cite police officers and/or firefighters as an example. But let there be no mistake: YOU are a hero, in every sense of the word. And because of your sacrifice, you have helped to raise the bar of law enforcement officers.
My reflection to you, Glen, is the keeping of the promise I made to you and all the rest...that I will write a reflection to each of you, and NEVER allow people to forget the sacrifice you so willingly made.
At this time of year, I am certain that your family is hurting more than any other time of the year. My Christmas wish for them, and all the families of officers who die every day, is that they feel the love and warmth, the respect and the gratitude of all of us, who so proudly carry on in your name and spirit. Although our thin blue line grew a little thinner, the line has held. Rest in peace with our Father, we have the watch. Until we meet someday, in a better place, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did. God bless you, your family, and God bless America. Amen
