Kate

I was there the night your dad went to heaven and I am truly sorry for your loss. your father will always be there for you and guide you in the right direction. I always think of him even though I never knew him. It was a night that I will not forget. I hope and pray that your whole family is well and your future is promising. God Bless you always.

I am truly blessed by all of these reflections about my father. I am writing this reflection on a very hard night.

I wish you were here daddy. I wish I could share my life with you, but ultimately, I wish I could know you. I wish I could remember something... Anything.

I know you're watching over me each and every day, but I can't help but wish I could feel your arms wrapped around me one last time.

Thank you to everyone who has left a comment, it's so uplifting to read the impact he made. I don't know much about him, but I can see that he made a difference. And I could not be more proud to hold the Silvestri name.

God, tell my daddy I say hi and I miss him. I hope you're both proud of me. Amen.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember carving a pumpkin with a big "G" on it and taking it to the scene. I stood there and cried thinking about how short your life was cut. I think about you all the time and wish you were still out there protecting the crazy streets of SB. Keep your arms of protection around all of us left behind.... God Bless your family.

My thoughts are with your loved ones and close friends on this 6th anniversary of your end of watch. You have not been forgotten and are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep watch over your loved ones, wrap your wings around them and protect them as they journey through life. Also, keep watch over those still out on patrol.

Poem by Richard Fife;

No person is ever truly alone.
Those who live no more,
Whom we loved,
Echo still within our thoughts,
Our words, our hearts.
And what they did,
And who they were,
Becomes a part of all that we are,
Forever.

Gerald, I had the pleasure of working with you during your all too brief tenure at the San Bernardino Police Department. I still feel your loss even today when I take time to reflect back on my career. It still brings a tear to my eye that your bright life was cut short. But like all thso before you it makes those of us left behind strive to be better persons just for having known you.

Officer Silvestri thank you for your service. It is just amazing that you paid the ultimate price for two people playing games with each other...the public just doesn't seem to realize that law enforcement officers take their job seriously and that to 'serve and protect' is what they do. The public needs to wake up and see that their game-playing actions have consequences that don't just affect themselves, but those that they choose to drag in to their childish games.

May you rest in peace.
