Reflections for Sergeant Carlton Daniel Jenkins

Another year gone, yet I remember you like today. You were one of those people that come to be a part of someone's life and you know right away they were meant to be there. From a law officer's stand point, you were one of those co-workers everyone wants beside them in the thick of things -and you were, on so manu ocassions brother. I changed a lot they day you were taken from us; the job changed for me too. I miss ya brother ! You are always with me; I feel you there. Rest easy.

Joey, I'm not sure you remember me, but I remember you. Dan spoke of you often, and you always brought a smile to his face when you were around. He always enjoyed having you ride on patrol with him. Be proud - Dan was one of the best cops I have ever known; he was a cop's cop! I'm proud to have known him. I'm proud to have called him a friend.

Dan,
It has been 9 years, I last saw you on a Thursday as you drove away in your patrol car. Then we talked on the phone a few days later. Before we hung up you said "Hey, I love You." You caught me off guard... I said "I love you too."
That was the last time we spoke. They called me at home at about 2am on a Sunday morning (I was up with Breanna looking for her baby doll)
My life has changed. The sun is not as bright as it used to be. Hoidays are just another day anymore. I think of you daily and talk about you often. I can't express in words how much I miss my best friend. No one can ever take your place. I still feel numb inside. I have read the post on this site and feel bad for those that did not know you like I did. You were a person that cared for others and how they felt. You felt sorry for those in need. I know that night when you saw that guy step out of the car you just knew this could not be the bad guy. I saw the tape and read your actions. You were deceived and I'm sorry for that. I know we had 36 years together but I think of the past 9 years we have spent apart, and that really hurts.
I know the kids and Lillie miss you along with all your othe family and friends. I know I'll never have the kind heart that you did. I miss you so much!!! I Love You!!!
I can still hear your voice saying my name (like only you could) I'll see you on Dec. 14.
Love, Joey

I was watching Police Chases last night and saw the pursuit that you had about 5 months pryer to you death. It was one of the craziest chases I have seen, and you finally put him out with a blown front tire. Afterwards they told of your EOW. Sir you are a true hero. I will keep your family in my prayers.

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died...

We miss you Dan! Gone but never forgotten

Being from Camden, I can say that you are missed by both your fellow officers and the citizenry alike. God knows you spent those 11 years of your life keeping people safe; it is a shame that you had to leave us so soon, but I believe it was an honorable way to go.

Rest assured no one will forget your sacrifice; every time I see 11:11, I realize how lucky all of my Troopers and officers are to go home to their families every day.

It's that time of year again, and you know you are always in my thoughts and prayers - especially around this time. I will always cherish the good times we spent together running the streets in Camden. You are and will always be the best partner I ever had. Rest easy and continue to watch over me while I continue the fight. I love and miss you dearly.

It's been almost 8 years since that night. I remember the BOLO being issued and feeling so angry. I never knew you, but you are a part of this brotherhood. I have never wanted to catch a suspect as bad as I did that night. I think that you were looking over us when he came our way. You kept us safe during his apprehension and for that I thank you. Thank you for your service. Rest easy, we'll take it from here.

RIP officer Jenkins. Just saw a show on TV with you catching someone in a car chase. So addned by your loss...

June 6, 2008

My 1st meeting with Dan was so unexpected...I had left the brand new post office in St. Marys. Upon my return , one of my lead workers told me my top foreman had been led off the job site by an officer. I was told the kind hearted law man was allowing the much warrented person to say good bye to his wife and children prior to being locked up. I went to the rented home of suspect to find the officer watching his little kids playing in a plastic pool in the front yard.Let me tell you the "bad" guy could see the officer was touched by this scene. Dan looked at me and asked, "Do you need him on the job?", pointing to my foreman. I said quickly , YES! He said in lieu of the small children and the fine he needed to pay, he would stuff the arrest warrant way back up under his seat....with the condition the worker would surely go to Woodbine on Friday and pay fine.
I saw right then he had a heart for people. What a softy. Read on the see how it played out......
Well the next time I saw Officer Jenkins , it was in the form of Superman. He drove his squd car up into the same rented house and wanted to know where that cracker was, to put it mildly. I said he had skipped out on the rent and some one else was renting the house. Not good enough... he demanded to SEE the new renter. I complied. He left that day saying he wanted a piece of that guy he had tried to help. Also he stated the Sheriff, Bill Smith had docked him for not bringing in the fugitive as per warranted. He was MAD yall! I could see then and there it was best to stay on his good side.
I went to your funeral. It was a special day . So sad ,but uplifting to see his brother ,officers and family sharing so many stories about you. Especilly your funny sence of humor. You were a real jewel. God speed!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I saw a car chase you were involved in on the TV show World's Wildest Police Chases. It really struck me deep when I discovered you lost your life in the line of duty not long after the chase. God bless you and your family. We will soldier on in your honor.

I just got done watching an episode of Wildest Police Videos which showed Sgt. Jenkins in pursuit of a stolen vehicle which was owned by a police officer in Florida, due to the persistence of Sgt. Jenkins the subject was taken into custody.

To the family and brothers in blue of Sgt. Jenkins I just want to let you know his dedication to the badge will never be forgotten not just in Georgia but all over the nation.

There are three defining persons that have willingly died for you. Jesus Christ, the US Soldier and the Law Enforcement Officer. Jesus died for your eternal security. The Soldier died for your national security. The LEO died for your personal security. As Jesus now lives, so, too, shall these two other saviors. Rest In Peace .

It is hard to believe it has been seven years now since you were taken from us. Even after all these years I still think of you often, especially around this time of year. You were just one of those guys that people loved to be around. Always joking, laughing, and helping (and being there) whenever people needed you. Moreover, you were a good friend. We who knew you best - miss you, and will continue to keep you close to our hearts and always in our memories. Love ya brother!

R.I.P. Sergeant Jenkins, you will never be forgotten.

February 12, 2007

I met Dan when he was employed with the Kingsland Police Dept. He was a real go getter, a cops cop. He was known for being short tempered, and quick to "call it as he saw it". I liked Dan's method of law enfocement. I rose to the rank of Captain at the Sheriff's Office, and was tasked to make the Sheriff's Office more proffessional. This led me to offer Dan a position as a Deputy Sheriff. Dan asked if he could call his wife to talk it over. Five minutes later, he met me and asked when could he start. This was the begining of one of the greatest employee/friendships you could ever have and lose. I remember after leaveing the Sheriff's Office to work for the D.O.D. Police, I was called at home, and told of Dan's death. I went to the roadside that early morning before sunrise, to see a friend and fellow officer as he lay on the roadside with a sheet drapped over his body. Dan will always be remembered for his love of the job which he gave his life. His kindness to the people of the community for which he served, and the love for his family. For those that did not attend, Dan was given a funeral that was an outpouring of the community. To this day there are people who still tell their stories of how Sgt. Dan Jenkins touched their lives in one way or another. I've since gone back to work at Camden S.O. and there is not a day that goes by that Dan's spirit is not felt. I just hope that I might leave this world knowing that I've done as good a job as my friend Dan did as a Deputy Sheriff.
Thanks for your time & friendship in this world.
We miss ya Buddy!!
