Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

October 23rd again…..an absolutely horrible day so long ago. Now, I can’t help but smile on this day because I get to remember my friend. You don’t forget the good ones in your life and fail to realize how special they were. I can only hope wherever Becky and Trevor may be………that Brian is not far away.

P.S. - I know you’re watching the Kansas City Chiefs win all the time……you got lucky they’re getting Mahomes…..lol.

I loved my brother more than words can express. I named my daughter Brianna after you my beloved brother. We spent our childhood together our successes and failures together. We always believed in one another and followed a similar path in life. We both served our country, we both lived for our families and we both enjoyed the smile of a friend more than our own smiles. Today was a day of erratic emotions as I remembered Mills from our time in the military together. Extreme lows as I mourn his death still 15 years later. Extreme highs as I remember the good times. I was there in Bosnia through the hard times. I was there when he met his wife Becky. I was there when his son Trevor was born. I was there through the wild and crazy times at Jackson. No matter what situation we were in, the bad and the good, Brian always had a smile on his face. He was my friend and damn a good one, something that I will never forget.

Brian, we started around the same time in Lexington. Me, Luke Fossum, and Bobby Goss, did some preservice training together. You were so new to our agency when you lost your life, responding to a call. Because we spent time together, I was the member of my shift that attended your funeral. It was such an emotional event. I will never forget the feelings it evoked. This year, I retired and I have found myself reliving the years. God Bless you as you RIP. In my 15 years at LCSD, you were the only on duty hero we lost. That is what I admired about him the most. I think I can speak for his buddies at Jackson and in Five Points, we miss you bro.....

Your heroism and service is honored today, the tenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Brian was/is a great guy. Regardless of who you were he always showed you respect. My dad and I were his nemesis in football, we the Packers, him the Chiefs. We had great times together and seeing his picture now really strikes me hard. I know he is watching his son everyday and I hope God protects him so one day he too can protect and serve.

I trained Brian at Ft Jackson SC when he first became a MP. We were on the same squad for a while and then I went to Traffic. About a year later he came to Traffic and I had the pleasure of training him again. We lived in the same barracks for about two years. We party together off duty and fought side by side on duty. I saw Brian grow from a kid into a man. He will be missed forever. I can not express in words what it means to lose somebody you spent many hours in a car with, let alone lived with off duty. I am proud to have served with Brian.
