"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

A POLICE OFFICERS FINAL CALL: a Police Officer stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true? The Police Officer squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't," Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep. I never passed a cry for help, though at time I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've cried unmanly tears. I don't know if I deserve a place among the people here. They really never wanted me around, except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand. There was silence all around the throne, Where the Saints had often trod. The Police Officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God. Step forward now Officer, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on heavens streets. You've done your time in Hell.

Hard to believe it was 8 years ago that my cousin was taken from us. Rest in pease Lisa, you are missed.

You were always there to talk to when I needed some advice and never turned down a moment to chat. I miss your smile around city hall. The things I learned from you riding around in the patrol car will always be with me. I miss you Lisa, God Bless You!

Lisa -
Hard to believe that you have been gone almost 7 years. I still think I should be able to hear your smiling voice on the radio going 12-1......
I miss the RENO trips.....I've had several people ask if I could put another one together but I can't do it. It would not be the same without you - we have lost a bunch of our RENO bus trip friends.....Dennis, Wes, my beloved Mother and you..... I have gone to RENO since but that is hard to. I always look around the casinos and expect to see you and my Mom playing a machine in the corner!!!
You were an awesome Police Officer and an even better friend.

You are gone but not forgotten my friend - REST IN PEACE....

Lisa,

Even though we worked at different agencies, we often endend up working some "interesting" cases together. I will never forget the all night stake-out. You and I talked and drank coffee in my old Jeep while Buddy, all camo'd out, laid in the brush in the brush on that sub-freezing cold, clear night. You were a wonderful friend, ready to give a hug and always setting a standard of integrity for those around you. May GOD bless all the others who miss you, too.

Back in 1984 I attended Supervisors School with Lisa - I remember discussions we had about Law Enforcement, and always found her to be a very intelligent, caring person. I always thought she would go places at Coos County. I just read the info about the accident. What a loss to the Community and Law Enforcement.

God bless my family when I am away,
Leave the lights on I'll return from harms way,

Grant me courage and strength to protect others each day,
So they live in peace without worry, fear or dismay,

Bless those who have fallen given their life for another
May their spirit live on from then and forever,

Return me home to my family at the end of each night,
May I pass through the door before the morning's first light,

Shall I give my life for another before the dawn breaks today,
God bless my family when I am away.

Lisa sat on my first interview, she asked me "what would you do if somebody spit on you?" I responded that I did not know how the law read on this matter so I would would respond appropriately, she asked me " wouldn't it piss you off?" and I said no! she asked "what does piss you off?" and I said not much just my ex-wife! That was my second oral interview that I had ever been through but I knew I had answered right when she started laughing. Lisa and I became very close friend's over the next 10 yrs and I turned to her when I had nobody else to turn to. She helped me through times that I could never describe and her husband Ron was there too. Lisa it was because of you that I left what I thought was a good thing in my life and pursued the life that I had set aside for retirement. You my friend showed me that life is all to short and we never know when it's our time, So thanks to you I was able to get my entire family out of a place that would of done nothing but bring future harm to them and us. Lisa we love you and miss you more that words could ever say, thank you so much for the time we had!!!!!!
