"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Hey Brother, As you know I think of you daily. The ninth anniversy of your death has now passed. I still cry when I speak of you. I saw Andrea and the girls the other day. You would be so proud. They are doing well and still members of our family as they always will be. I miss you and love you. I remember many nights on the belt highway. God you were such a great back up. I never had to worry. I miss you brother.

I remember maybe just a couple nights before he was killed. He had been called to my house. I was only eight years old and it's still hard to believe this. But my father who my mother was no longer with had been to our house while we was gone and it looked like he had tried to break in so we got scared and called the cops. He had came and talked to my mother and told her that they would keep an officer in the area for a couple nights just to keep a look out.
The day of his funeral I remember standing on the playground of Lindbergh leaning against a fence watching his casket and family drive past the school.

My thoughts are with your loved ones and close friends on this 8th anniversary of your end of watch. You have not been forgotten by those that love you nor has the Blue Family let you be forgotten. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

Although I did not serve on the police department with Brad, we grew up in the same town. I knew Brad for many years and knew him to be a good and decent man.
I was home on leave from service in Korean when he was killed and the shock of someone you know falling in service I still feel.

I learned about your unfortunate death as part of a newswriting and reporting class. I know I don't even know you but I still want to thank you for what you did. You were a brave man to serve both our country and then your community as a police officer. Thank you.

I found out about "your story" as an assignment for one of my news classes, so obviously, I don't know you personally. I just wanted to say "thanks" for protecting us...first in the military, and then as an officer. You paid the ultimate sacrifice and for that, I admire you!

I still think about you. You will not be forgotten. RIP 0073. I am moving on, but need you to continue watching out for me. 02-21-05

Rest in Peace, Brother. Your memorial came up on the ODMP homepage when I logged on a little while ago and it was very apparent that you were a Marine by the photo that was shown. As sad as it is to lose a brother in the way that the country lost you, there is a certain pride in knowing that honor and courage are not lacking among the brotherhood.

In your departure for eternal duty under the Supreme Commander, you passed the sword to all those who were left behind. Watch over your family, the Corps and your brothers in blue and keep them all from harm until they are called to join you in Paradise.

May your family find solace and feel pride in knowing that you are a proven warrior and true hero.

Almost six years. Yet, I still think about you as I work the streets striving to be the best and providing the highest degree of service to improve the quality of life for those that we serve. I have been in several tough situations in the past 6 years. You are the angel on my shoulder watching over me, making sure I make it home after each shift. God bless your family and all the officers on the road BE SAFE! Brad, I will never forget you!

I was just sent here by a friend. Never knew this existed before today. Brad, I'll always rememre you and I digging on those metal wagon wheels at your folks place when we were young, thinking they were Civil War cannon wheels. Or rememebring you being a bit of the clown in New G.......I remember when you died, how my mom called worried that it might be you and seeing if I could call Rock...when he didn't answer, I just knew. You didn't have to rush in, you could have waited...but that wasn't like you, you always cared about people. Have seen the twins when they were over at my folks a while back....you would be so proud. You won't be forgotten.

Just today I was listening to the radio and they played Seasons in the Sun. I couldn't help but remember the times we sang that song together.
