Thank you for your comments, it has been wonderful to be able to read your thoughts about my son. It has been several years since I have visited this sight, I actually had forgotten about it. I may have forgotten about this sight, but I have not forgotten about my son, he will always live in my heart forever. I would say to all that visit this site, the loss of David has been the most difficult thing I have ever faced, however, I did not face it alone. My faith and trust in God has been a major part of my life since 1979 and it is my faith and trust in God that has carried me through the loss of David.
Nothing happens by chance, I believe that David's life was in God's hand. Although I do not always understand the ways of God, I trust him completely and I trusted David into his care while he was in Kuwait and believe that there was a reason for David's death. I am trusting that one day God will reveal to me his plan and purpose for David's death. I believe that I will see David in Heaven one day.
David, you will always be loved and missed.

I had the honor of serving with Randy at Travis AFB, being his supervisor and being his assistant flight chief. Unfortunately I feel some responsibility for his death and it is something that I have had to live with. When I returned from Kuwait in the summer of 98 I remember telling some of the airman about my TDY. I spoke at length about the Kuwait City International Airport (KCIA) and the good times we had at this austere location. He spoke of wanting to go TDY and I urged him to go on the next rotation to Al-Jabar and then apply for KCIA duty. A couple of weeks later he told me he was going to Al-Jabar. I was unable to voice my sincere apologies to his family and to this day have have issues with it. Randy was a hell of a young man and it is a shame he was taken so soon.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the accident. I will never forget that horrible day. You will always live on in my memories of you at Al Jaber and KCIA.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

David,
I can't believe it's already been 9 years since that tragic phonecall I received. There is not a day that I don't think about you, I miss you so much. You will always live on in my heart. I always remember how much fun it was talking to you and having Charles interupt us to get on the phone and give me crap. He was a great guy too, and I know you guys are together now still doing what you can to have fun. Someday we'll be together again and we'll pick up right where we left off, you were truly one of my very best friends and I'm so glad I got to have you in my life. I will always love you.

I was the permanent duty First Sergeant assigned to Al Jaber the day Airmen Schroeder and Campbell passed away. It was a very difficult day and even weeks that followed. To lose not just one but two troopers in one day is devestating. They put themselves in harms way and paid the ultimate price so we could be free. That must never be forgotten. God Bless his family and friends.

I was deployed to Al Jaber Air Base when this tragedy happened. It was a very sad day and one that those of us who were there will never forget. Airman Schroeder and Airman Campbell answered the call of duty and selflessly went into in harms way. They left the comforts of home and traveled to a far away land to preserve our precious freedom. It is because of them and others like them that we live in such a great country. I think of them from time to time and always will. God Bless Them.
