Reflections for Police Officer William Henry Burtt

Officer Burtt you were always a local hero to us, living in the Huntersville section of the city, may you rest in peace.
My Mother Mrs Puddin and your Mother Mrs Lee were best friends, so you and the Bates family are my family.

Our lives crossed on that February day. I was working in my office on the 2nd floor (my sister worked with me in the same office). I will never forget hearing a gunshot and looking out the window and seeing what happend. My sister (who was an EMT volunteer) was running down the stairs and trying to get out the door to help. We had to stop her for a moment as that terrible person was still there. When she finally got to you, she with the help of others did the best they could. All I could do is watch, I didnt know how to help. That evening my neices told me they knew you and what a great person and influance you were on them. They said you would always stop and talk to them when they were walking down the street. I think about you often and wish I had known you ... Rest in peace.

There not a week that goes by that you dont cross my mind. I will always remeber the singing in the locker room of the gospel music from you. I still beleive to this day you showed me the path to the lord and being saved.I am, no longer in law enforcement but havce been graced with living in the Alleghany mountains as a building official. You and your suits will always have a special place in my heart and I looke forward to seeing you in heaven.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Burt, after the most recent death of a Norfolk Officer, I keep thinking, "sure wish that Burt was here." You had the ability to bring a side or light to an exposive situation and make those involved know that all will be OK. It all happens for a reason. You too may have been over at the shooting in the area you so often visited the Stop and Shops- but you would have been known because you ALWAYS prowdly displayed your badge in plain view. I know that you will help guide the new officers how to avoid such a sad and difficult tragedy. Look out for the latest NPD who has joined you.

Daddy,
I still find it hard to believe that you have been out of my life for 8 years now. But I know that even though you are out of my life physically, you are still here spiritually. Daddy, I still miss you so much and it often feels like this nightmare just happened yesterday, but I am getting stronger. Your baby is all grown up now. I know that you are looking down on me with a big smile as you watch me become a young woman. I love you and you will never be forgotten.

Seems like only yesterday we were kidding around in Norfolk Circuit Court.
As much as you enjoyed being a Deputy Sheriff we all knew you had your heart set on becoming a Norfolk Police Officer. You enriched the lives of everyone you ever met with your infectious smile and quick wit. May you rest in peace my friend.

Burtt,
What can I say except thank you for allowing me to be in your police academy and for making every single one of us laugh and laugh. You were a character that no one has ever seen before. You sure did dress fancy and I cant think about your purple suit and yellow one. You are and will always be one of kind. You had a heart of gold and I am glad I was able to have known you for as long as I did. I havent forgotten and I will not ever. May GOD Bless you, your family, and children.
