Reflections for Sergeant Anthony Millison

I like Tony Millison was an Air Force veteran and when I met him we were both employed by the US Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons. During the time we were all looking to further our Law Enforcement careers by going to Illinois State Police or Chicago Police Department etc. I recall when we all went to take the ISP exam. Tony talked me into going. He followed it through to the end and was hired. I on the other hand decided to stay put with the BOP for 26 years until I retired. Tony and I used to ride to work together and if you knew him he had a sense of humor and was like able human being. On the day of his incident I had just passed through that point of I-57. When I found out days later I was devastated. He was a good friend that would give you the shirt off his back. I travel the memorial section with his name and I get a sinking feeling of loss in my gut. But at the same time I’m proud to have know him..

Years cannot erase the time we spent together. My best friend and cuzn Fudd spent as much time with each other as we did with our other halves. The emptiness in my heart will never be filled until we meet again in heaven. I'll never forget you, I know you're still with me. Love you, brother.

To million family,
I drive daily on these highways of Chicago. Every morning as I say my prayers. I thank your family and pray for their safety and care through the day, because I know your Tony is my traveling angel. I know he is watching over me
For example, I was driving in Chicago. It was a four lane road. But cars were parked along the curb. I had to go slow because part of the lane was dug out to be replaced. A pickup truck it not want to wait for me to cross the intersection, so he went into the oncoming traffic to go around me. A semi was heading his way. He pull into my lane. I was still going in the groves but my car moved to the right as if someone else was driving. The pickup made it safely over, and the semi was able to continue on his way. And I pulled over to the side to give thanks to tony for being there for me. Millison family know I pray for your family every day. Thank you for Tony. He is my angel!!!

Anthony Millison and I were classmates in the State Police academy. In fact, we were bunk mates there. I don't remember him ever causing any problems, he just quietly went about the daily grind. I remember he had a rather fierce dedication to fitness, in line with the Academy motto, if I remember it verbatim: "When you choose law enforcement as a career, you lose the right to be physically unfit." I am grateful he introduced me to the singing of Whitney Houston. It is so sad to have lost someone at such a young age whom I grew to know. God speed.

I lived around the corner from Trooper Anthony in Dolton IL.
We would often see each other and wave or nod as he drove by most likely heading to or from work. We never formerly met but our faces were familiar in the neighborhood. I remember that day. When I heard it on the news broadcast and saw his face, I knew the world and Dolton had lost someone special. The other day as I was driving down I-57, I saw the sign honoring him. I smiled and told my wife the story of Tony Millison. Thank you for the memory and the example. Though we never formerly met , I feel like we were friends.

Tony,
I think of all the times that we worked together and I can't help but smile. I always admired your dedication to duty, the way you carried yourself and your humor. The week of your death, when we also lost Trooper Erin Hehl, was absolutely the most difficult week I have ever known. I still think of you and pray that your family has found peace.

Every year I remember that I was the first one there by your side that cold morning responding to a man laying in the the roadway call. Two other Dixmoor units arrived shorly after and others arrived to help as well. I knew that I could not help you with the tramatic injuries. I tracked down the driver that caused you to jump because he was trying to leave the scene by walking away southbound on I-57. I know you have a family that misses you. Your brothers that worked the streets with you in the small South Suburban Poilce Departments will never forget you,or that day. We miss you too!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I stood at your panel at the National Memorial two weeks ago, holding onto a dear friend while he sobbed for you...I cried too, knowing that he'd held you as you lay there dying, trying to give you his strength. I wish we didn't have to see your name on that Wall, that you were still here in body as well as spirit, but I know that you are at peace now. Rest well, my brother, we'll see one another again.
