Remember it well, I was there.
The adrenaline rush of a pursuit, then the Leonard Hughes ( suspect) misjudges a turn and crashes into a building at East 76 and Carnegie. We all jump out and start running towards his car, we were gonna yank him and beat his a**. Then all hell breaks loose, starts shooting at us through back window, we retreat and return fire. After securing suspect, look around to make sure everyone is Okay, but where is Hillary? He was laying on the ground beside his car, we run over and put him in the backseat of another car and drive him to Mt. Sinai's, but it was too late, the damage was done

This occurred In the 5th District, My partner and I were working in the 6th. We responded to the scene, however Hillary was already gone as was the suspect. We volunteered to remain in the 5th and cover calls for service, while 5th District officers visited the hospital and share their grief. We covered the complete "Lower End" (3 Zones) and were called to only a few runs, but it was so different . Most people apologized for their request for service and every call the complainant offered their condolences . It was a terrible night, but the citizens added a sliver of light to the darkest evening a police officer can have....R.I.P. Hillary, you will never be forgotten.

I was his partner and friend, academy partners we laughed and suffered together, just like Marine Corps 1969-72 we fought many times making arrests , he was in good shape and handled himself well, I will never forget him nor his family, wife Donna and sons now Cleveland Fire... I had transferred to the Motorcycle Unit and was sick when I came in and found out what had happened, very hard to go on but I did and admit it was not easy, I rode along car 555 on the Motorcade to Holy cross and as the helicopters did a fly by and peeled off in formation I had to cry, the streets were lined all over with flags and well wishers, God was smiling down on him that day you could feel it. Rest In Peace my brother in Arms as I will always remember you.
