Reflections for Police Officer James Russell Sorrow

I just found this, i thought the world of Russ. i had just been on with the city just over year.
I remember that day like yesterday. Russ and i had court that day and he was late. After court
we walked outside and he told me he just bought a truck. We talked a little longer and he said he was going to serve a warrant. I asked if he wanted me to go with him but he said no he was going to the clock restaurant and then going to find the guy. That was the last time i saw him. I made down to Jackie Mauldin's on stone to meet another officer and that's when everything went down. After that day i was never the same. I always wonder if i had gone with him would it had been different. I miss him very much and will never forget him or that day.

Soon if will be 22 years since you were taken. Since that day Justin our nephew was taken in a car crash. Keith our older brother died of a heart attack and now daddy has joined you. Mama is with me now and her Alzheimer's is progressing. The only good thing is she doesn't remember her grief of losing all of you. Russ, I miss you so much.

Two days ago one of your fellow brothers from Greenville City Police Department arrived in heaven and I know you were there to greet him. Almost 20 years after your death Officer Allen Jacobs was senselessly murdered, just as you were, pursuing wickedness through the streets of Greenville. Someone told me that Officer Jacobs had shared your ODMP site on his Facebook page on the last anniversary of your death and it pains me that we will all be doing the same for him now for years to come. Wrap your arms in your fellow brother, I know you will both have a lot to talk about. We miss you both and we are all eternally grateful for your sacrifices.

I was working with Russ at GCDC when he found out Greenville had hired him. He was hovering six inches off the ground. Him and Morgan and Flavell and me would lift weights after shift in the County weight room. I had to pick him up to give him a ride to works sometimes when he lived off of Easley Bridge. Everyone would ask me when are you coming across the hall meaning out in the street. I went to work at Greer and was working Narcotics when Russ was murdered. My wife called me into our living room and I watched the news and it was like what am I looking at and there was a picture of Russ. I just heard a ringing in my ears and sunk to my knees in front of the TV. I have never felt that much pain in my life. Russ is my friend and I will forever remember him. Whenever they report a police fatality it's Russ's face that immediately flashes before my minds eye. I think of how young he was and how much life was stolen from him. It makes me sick to my stomach when I recall it.

My cousin, you are still missed to this day. I has been almost 16 years. My fondest memories are watching your speed and agility on the field, playing football or Ware Shoals High School.

RIP Dear cousin. You will never be forgotten.

When I first was trying to get hired by the department, I sat in the lobby of the LEC by your uniform on the wall. Sadly to say, I did not know your name or of your sacrifice before that day. During all the training I have been through, all the respect that has been shown by the veteran officers, I know that you were a great man and a great officer. Have no worry that a rooky like myself will ever forget you.

I think of you and that awful moment I knew you were gone, 14 years ago. But I like to remember you when as a rookie you worked under me in dispatch awaiting the academy. You wanted to out on the street, but worked with dedication until that time you were out there working the streets. Your sense of humor always made me laugh...I remember a tape I researded and you were given some call in West Greenville involving a guitar...I laughed out loud when you responded to H.Q. and said you would be strumming on over there....Your family, your police family miss you always. I know you are watching over us though on that beat beyond. RIP!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 13th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
