Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Troy Louis Barboza

I was a street pedi-cabber in Waikiki when you walked the beat 20+ years ago.

I got to know you a little as the fair police officer you were....you talked to me about my education and how you created your own major at Chaminade U because you wanted to be a cop.

I snagged a purse snatcher once and you gave me tons of kudos, but never a "break."

You would probably never remember me, if your life was not stolen form you, but I have always remembered you......when I think of someone that I would have liked to have been like...I think of you still.

When I think of true tragedy, I still think of you and your loved ones.

You are still making a difference in my decisions and my judgements today, all of this time later. I have done well in life, and in some way, the contacts I had with you.....helped me do that.

Today 21 years later, i cried again for you officer Barboza.

I imagine that there are many people just as insignificant as I was in your daily life, that you touched tremendously, without even realizing it.

Mahalo for your spirit and peace with God Sir.

I walked my dog on Waikiki Beach this evening and there was a beautiful sunset. Red, like it was on fire.

I thought of the many times we sat at the beach, mostly at Diamond Head and talked and you held me while we watched the sunset. You were the most romantic, faithful, funny man I have ever been with. I too, remember when we were together girls would hand you their phone numbers and you would politely decline and seek me out, grab me and say proudly "this is my girlfriend".

What a shame that you were robbed you of your dreams, of being able to hold your newborn child and watch them grow.

I miss you with all my heart.

Merry Christmas, Troy!

December 23, 2007

oh...it's cold out. i thought of you today, your warm hugs wrapped up in your big, strong arms, carrying me on the beach on your back during sunset watching for the green flash. Nowadays unfortunately, cops don't have the reputation that you had, faithful, kind, understanding, romantic and a one-woman guy. When I was with you, I was the only one in your eyes, no, make that in your whole world! Others would throw themselves at you but you would smile, point to me and say I'm with her! How proud I was of you.

I hope to see you again someday, however I have a feeling you are a very busy and in demand angel, but I hope you will still recognize me.

It's been 20 years since you've been taken from us...today is such a sad day.

You are remembered today and thank you Sir for your service.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Troy,

It has been so many years since we worked together at the hardware store in Concord. I can remember how sad and angry it made me when I heard about your death. You were a great person and a great friend. It is wonderful to read all of these reflections and see how you had such a positive influence on so many lives. You are missed!

I miss you and our talks into the early morning hours, talking about life and our hopes and dreams. Your shy smile and how faithful you were to me and for that, I thank you.

TROY,

I SAW YOUR PARENTS YESTERDAY. THEY HAD JUST RETURNED HOME FROM THE TORCH RUN. THEY ARE STILL VERY PROUD OF YOU. I THINK OF YOU OFTEN AND AM STILL AT A LOSS OVER HOW YOU WERE TAKEN FROM US. YOU WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN MY FRIEND.

MY RESPECT ALSO GOES TO KURT FOR HIS ACTIONS AND LOYALTY TO THE BARBOZA FAMILY! YOU COULD NOT ASK FOR A BETTER FRIEND.

Aloha e Officer Troy Louis Barboza,
Below I left a reflection for you as I never forgot you and the ultimate sacrifice you paid to protect our beautiful State of Hawai`i. Hawai`i isn't Hawai`i anymore. Much has changed in 20 years. Soon, we will be upon the 20th anniversary of your untimely passing. You were so young at only 24. I believe in a very special Hawaiian word called, "Kahiau". It means, "To give lavishly and unselfishly from the heart without expectation of return." This is one of the many values that my only child a son, age 14 now, has learned to embrace through his gift of education in Kamehameha Schools.

Troy, I have been blessed. My sister, Nalani sent me a navy blue tee-shirt. This is what the tee-shirt is printed with:

Front of shirt:
Left side, 15" in length a brown torch with the words, "First Hawaiian Bank" in the cup of the torch with anorange, yellow, and green rainbow. The words, "TORCH RUN" is printed vertically down the handle of the torch in black and white bold lettering. The flame (fire) is of deep orange, white, yellow and gold with a plumeria lei of the same colours circling the entire body of the torch from top to bottom.

Back of shirt: Note below:
(Where the "O" is in the word, "TORCH", a Police Shield is in lieu of the "O" and a red band on the top of the shield by the eagle's wings spells out, "TROY" in bold white letters. On the bottom of the shield, the same is duplicated for Troy's last name, "BARBOZA". On a red band and in white letters.)

There also is a plumeria lei in the colours of yellow and white, outlined in orange that encircle the words, "LAW ENFORCEMENT"
"TORCH RUN"
"2007"

This is the back of the tee-shirt:

FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK
PRESENTS
LAW ENFORCEMENT
TORCH RUN
2007
A BENEFIT FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS HAWAII

TOP FUNDRAISERS
Honolulu P.D. * Maui P.D.* Hawaii P.D.* Kauai P.D. * Hawaii Air National Guard
U.S. Army Military Police* U.S. Customs & Border Protection
U.S. Airforce Security Forces* FBI* U.S. Marine Corps Military Police

I live on the Island of Hawaii, not on Oahu. What were the chances of me receiving your shirt as a gift? My sister does not know that my passion is to support the ODMP, Inc. I have been blessed. Kahiau. When I opened the package and read the tee-shirt that it was a benefit for you, I lost my breath and fell to my knees.

"Your" shirt is being framed and put behind glass. It will be hung on a special wall in a special room where I go to leave tributes on now, hundreds of fallen officers. It is a honor and a privilege to leave a tribute on your memorial so that others may "see" and "feel" that special love, that special "Aloha" that was left in a reflection, in a moment of time today.

This is dedicated to you Troy and to all those who visit your Memorial Page that can not see the tee-shirt with their eyes but feel it and your everlasting spirit with their heart, as I do.

May God bless you and keep you forevermore.
With love and aloha,
Moana :)

Haven't stopped by in a while - thinking about you today, and always......

May 11, 2007

Someone was wearing a Troy Barboza torch run t-shirt at work today. Yes, 20 years later and you are still very much remembered and honored. I never met you but you worked closely with someone I love very much, he is now with the FBI. I know that you are resting peacefully with the Lord...God Bless.

It was such a beautiful day today. I guess that's what made me think of you..... :0)

March 22, 2007

Hey Man...I think of you from time to time. It still hurst. The night you were killed you were going to meet us after work. I guess you decided to go home and our hearts were all broken. I saw you at Easter services at the Waikiki Shell with your wonderful girlfriend the year you were taken from us. You looked so happy and I know you were at peace with God.

We miss you. You live on in all of us. See you someday again Brother.

--"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou

Aloha e Officer Troy Louis Barboza,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum; a keeper of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here.

This "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is a hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page, gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family; one `Ohana. May we find solace as we give solace to the families who have lost a loved one.

Officer Troy Louis Barboza, God Bless you. You are a hero. You are`Ohana. Hawai`i embraces you as one of their own. No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace. I wish you, your loved ones, and your fellow officers, peace and love beyond all understanding. I HONOR you today for you HAVE NOT been forgotten.

I remember you Troy. I remember your death. I never forgot it. I will never forget you as I will never forget Steve Favela. Rest in Peace. Godspeed.

** May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. **

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

December 31, 2006

Merry Christmas Troy! :0)

December 14, 2006

Dear Officer Barboza,

I was a teenager when you were taken from us. Yet even now, as an adult, I still remember you and can truly appreciate what you stood for. It was a blessing to have had you in our lives. You made the streets safer and helped those living with disabilities believe in themselves. You will always be an example of what so many people strive to be - a good human being. Just as the torch flame burns in your name, your spirit of bravery and compassion will burn forever in our hearts.

God Bless you Troy and your family. Hawaii will always love you.

December 5, 2006

Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you as the holidays approach - you will always live in the memories of your family and friends.

December 4, 2006

On the 19th anniversary of your tragic and senseless death, may your family and friends reflect on the memories of happy times shared with you. I think of you often, and always will...... you will never be fogotten.

October 22, 2006

Dear Officer Barboza,
