Every June 10th at 10:02pm I stop and say a special prayer for you, Dick. I was the paramedic that received the call that to this day still remains the longest 13 minutes of my life!! I had never felt so helpless in the back of the ambulance as I rushed you to the then Tulsa Regional ER dept. I thank GOD Dick I got to tell you enroute to the ER that your fellow officers got the assailant! You were so brave as I leaned over your face and said, "You hang in there Dick." And you told me "I'll try". You backed me up on so many of "those kinds of calls" and you had my back and kept me safe so I could do my job. Watching your K-9 "Dino" stand guard at your funeral casket...well, lets just say there wasn't a dry eye at that moment. God bless you for all you did for the city of Tulsa and now Dino is up there in heaven right by your side again. And when my day comes to also "go home" I look forward to seeing you again sir....God bless your family and friends as well as ALL those who continue to serve in a moreso than not thankless "job"!!! To you all, be safe and PLEASE wear your vests out there!

I can still remember the night that I sat and talked with Dick on some side street while waiting for the next call.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dick worked an off-duty security job at my place of business in 1989. He was the first officer I went on a ride-along with. He was so dedicated to his job and his wonderful partner, Dino. We remained friends over the years and he kept a routine of "checking in" on me every night he was on duty at a convenient store I worked in. What a huge loss to TPD and mostly, his family and friends, including me.
Dick, you will never be forgotten. May you and Dino rest in peace, for you are together again, partners forever.

I was working at one of the malls as a security officer when the Tulsa Police Department lost a great hero. My supervisors had just completed the Tulsa Police Reserve Academy, and they attended his funeral. Even though I wasn't a reserve officer at the time of Officers Hobson's death, I hated to hear that an officer lost his life. No matter what state or city it's in, any law enforcement officer who gets killed in the line of duty is a big loss to every police department, whether it's in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Florida, California or New York City. I've been a Reserve Police Officer since 1998 for the Tulsa Police Department, and I am proud to put on that uniform and continue the service of those who have passed on, they will never be forgotten. For those Officers with the NYPD continue to serve, and we will never forget those brave heros who perished on September 11th 2001. To all my brother officers who wear the badge stay safe and God Bless you all.

As I visited this site today, I saw that it was the 8th anniversary of your death. I know the pain your family felt then is still with them. May GOD bless them and may you rest in peace, Sir.

Rest in peace brother.

Officer Dick Hobson was one of the most dedicated K-9 officers the Tulsa Police Department ever had. Hours after other officers left a scene, he would still be there tracking and checking. It was not uncommon to have him come on the radio and ask for a unit to transport a prisoner, because he stayed behind and did not give up. No matter the weather he would go by with a big smile.

One of the best all around Police Officers I have ever known, any decent person who ever met Dick knew that he was the kind of Officer every Officer wished they could be. You will be greatly missed.
