Officer Thornton's photo had "Killed in Indian alley," written on the back of the photo.
Officer Booth said that he was walking east on Main Street when he saw a figure in the shadows of a porch house that was in the 2600 block.The house was on a corner next to a alley.
Booth heard loud talking from the house and noticed the figure leave the porch and walk towards the back of the house.
Booth walked up to the porch and recognized Thornton talking to two men.Booth asked,"Hello Thornton,are you all right?"
"Yes,he replied."This fellow pulled a gun on me."
"Do you need any help?"Booth asked.
"No,call the wagon."
Booth turned to walk back towards the side walk when he heard a gunshot.He also heard a voice with a foriegn accent say "Get him."At that moment Booth heard another shot.
Booth says that he reached for his pistol in the right pocket of his Macinac coat but found that his right hand had been hit by buckshot.
He then used his left hand to pull out the pistol.As two men ran by him he took two shots but then the automatic jammed.
Booth described the two men as being Italian.Two suspects were arrested in the next few days but there were no in dictments.
Before Thornton was taken to St Paul's Sanitarium he layed in the alley and whispered in a hoarse voice "Boys,I'm going to die."
According to attending doctor W.W.Samuell,Booth's hand would be permanantly crippled.
