Reflections for Police Officer Stephen A. Taylor

Today, Oct 19, 2022, marks 40 years since Steve was killed. It was a tragic, life changing day for me and so many. Steve you were a great husband, friend, police officer, and all around great person. Also a Christian.
I will always love you. You are so missed. ❤️

Remembering my childhood friend Stephen Taylor on this chilly afternoon. I still cry for the injustice that befell you old friend at the hands of a demon. We enjoyed friendship all through school years and had many fun afternoons riding our bikes and playing ball with different friends. I will always miss you brother. Much Love.

Remembering you this day, dear cousin. We spent some time together, worked together, even went on a double date in your Matador. My last memory of you was seeing your police car flying towards downtown, lights glaring on October 19th, that fateful day. May you rest in peace.

Another Officer was wounded, a retired Navy man ("Bettle Baily"). I also remember that the suspects were shot multiple times and yet still managed to run for a while. Everyone decided afterward that .38 caliber was NOT the round to use in police work. I also recall that a retired officer was driving a Parking Control scooter and shot one of the two suspects. A very sad day.

I remember this. I was a new paramedic in Escambia county. Though I did not run the call I was on duty and listening on the radio to the crews that were... I didn't know the officer but I will never forget the day...

My cousin Steve. I remanence about the times and similarities you and I had together, the adventures, laughter, and bond. Can you believe 60 years old....guess we can now be considered as old farts.
I just wish you could be here to celebrate with me, but I know there is a party in heaven for you. We were only 10 days apart and the times we shared were very special. You'll always be a part of me Cuz and know that I will never forget you.

Happy Birthday sweet brother!!! Hope you and Mom, Dad, Ann, and Jack had a wonderful party together!!

Steve, I think you would be so happy to know people are becoming more aware and appreciative of law enforcement officers today. It is so heartwarming to see someone go up to one of them just to say thank you for what you do and shake their hand...even try to get them to let them buy their lunch!! I know I want to do it for every one of them I can because I know the sacrifices they so unselfishly make to keep their fellowman safe in this sometimes crazy world. You were one of those unselfish officers Steve and you will always be my hero!! I will forever be so proud of you!!

I love you and will keep you close to my heart always!! Pray that God will hold you in his loving arms...until we meet again.

I was an Escambia County Sheriff's Deputy at the time this happened. Steve was killed in the same robbery that an old family friend - "Beetle Bailey - was shot and slightly wounded. This shoot-out gave all of us LEO's concerns about the .38 special we were required to carry at the time. I carried a S&W .357 on duty but loaded out .38 as required. Damn that Dirty Harry movie series and the dummies who bought into the hype. I upped the ante to .38+p+. A good officer fallen and not forgotten. I seem to recall Steve was admitted to law school and was planning to leave the Department to attend full time.

We remember meeting Steven in 1967 when we rented a small house from Louise. What a handsome young man he was then. It is good to remember all those we have loved in the past and hope to see again in Heaven with the redeemed.

Happy Birthday Steve!! I have been thinking of you all day. I miss you so very much every day..but even more on special days like today. It's been over 32 years since you were taken from us and yet I can still see you so clearly..so handsome..with the greatest smile!! And I could never forget those eyes..how you could make them dance ...haha..loved it!! We feel so blessed and thank God that we still have sweet Mom with us. You don't have to worry about her. She is doing well. She has your picture in her living room and loves to show it off. She has always been so proud of you.
We all are!! You weren't just my brother...you were a friend that I could always talk to about anything.

God Bless you sweet brother and hold you close until we meet again.
You are forever in my heart...love you always.

Steve,

I can't believe it's been almost 32 years since your watch ended. I remember seeing the news of your death on the teletype when it came into the sheriff department that fateful day. It was one of the worst days of my life loosing a fellow officer and my first cousin. It took 24 years before justice was served and as I promised you the day we laid you to rest, I was there to ensure justice was served.

Just know we're still thinking about you and at times, like now, I can't hold back the tears. But I know I must remain strong believing we will be together again one day to continue our adventures. I missed you very much Steve and still remember your smile, laughter, and the weird thing you could do with your eyes...LOL

May God continue to bless you and our family, but know you are still very much with us in our memories.

1st Cousin of Steve

My Dear Steve,
How we miss you. Years go by but you will never be forgotten by those who love you dearly! Your humor and kindness will always be remembered. I'm still laughing at the secret treasure hunts by you and Gary. By the way, he still goes treasure hunting, and I'm sure he takes you along. Often wondered if you Guys ever found the treasure of the day? How your Mom and I laughed at these escapades. Well, Son, I will stop for now, but please know you are in my heart and prayers always.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the seventeenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I am glad that justice was finally rendered for your brutal murder.

Rest In Peace.

To your family: I understand the meaning of lives forever altered and know that when you lose someone so precious to you that the pain never goes away...the pain and the pride is forever. I pray for your solace.
