Rest in Peace

I ask one thing - that in still, far-off days,
Someone who knew me should in their daily rounds,
Suddenly pause, caught by some sight or sound,
Some glance, some phrase, some trick of memory's ways
which brings me to mind, then I shall wait,
eager with hope, perhaps to hear -
“how great if he were with us still!”
And then at the end, all that I wish for is just -
“he was my friend!”

Though I never had the honor of meeting my great grandpa, I am so very proud of him! He is indeed a hero that deserves to be honored and remember as such.

My grandpa, Mr. Herbert Stites, was a boy of only 9 years of age when his father passed away on"The Rock" that cold day in May. He has given me a wonderful glimpse into his rich history, and of spending his early years as a young child as the son of a heroic gaurd on the island in the early 1940's.

Though the tragic loss of of his father at such a young age had a great impact on my grandfathers life, he has gone on to raise a beautiful family, and I am honored to be a part of this family.

Now that I am the mother of my own beautiful children, I am looking forward to the day that I can share our family history with them.

I was very pleased to find this memorial and even more so to see the heart felt wishes you all have left here for him.

Thank you all, and my heart goes out to all the other families out there who were affected by this tragedy.

GOD BLESS.

Every fallen Officer deserves to have a reflection listed. Harold, I am honored to be the first to pay my respects to you. You were a brave Officer and public servant.

I offer my condolences. You may have served and died a long time ago, but you are not forgotten.

Rest in peace, you remain our brother.
