My father, Officer Lloyd Maddox was serving with Officer Spann the night this happened. I was just 3 weeks old at that time so I have no personal memories about this, but I know this had a life-long effect on my father, and he would never speak of it. It was such a tragic loss for all involved.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 58th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

I was 19 years old and living in the farming community of Eula when Jim Spann lost his life in the line of duty. I remember the shock and disbelief of the entire area at his loss. I did not know Jim, or the Spann family personally. The entire area was saddened by the event and it was etched in our memories.
Daily news today caused me to reflect on "kinder, gentler" times, but also brought to mind this sad event, and the name of the police officer remembered all these years for his sacrifice. A quick scan of his name on my computer brought up this article. Ms. Whiting, I'm sure that I am not the only one who still remembers Jim Spann by name. I hope you see this, and find some small comfort in knowing that his name is still remembered by many of us old timers. We thank you for his service.

My dad was Jimmy's partner at the time of his death & I was named after him. Dad served APD 32 years before retiring. I've been with the department 24 and have a son planning on getting into the academy. The legacy continues.
