Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff William D. Simmons

I remember seeing something about this on A&E or something similar. It is hard to imagine someone getting off with a short sentenance of 40 years for taking a life when they could have just drove on past. To the men and women of Sangamon County, keep up the good work.

I've long wanted to leave a reflection for you but I've never been sure what to say.

I was a 17-year-old rural Sangamon County resident when your murder made me aware that violence can occur even to people I respect, even somewhere that I considered to be safe. That much of my life passed again before your murderer was charged. Even so, when I heard your name, I remembered sitting at our kitchen table reading the newspaper that spring day and wondering how someone could shoot a a deputy who was trying to help someone. I wondered about your children, how they would cope with losing you.

I'm now a lot more aware of the bad side of life and I often wish I wasn't.

God bless you.

I learned of your story on The A%E television show Cold Cases. It took 17 years but your murderer was brought to Justice. He was convicted to 40 years in prison, too bad it couldn't be longer. Thank you for your service to your community and country.

Rest in Peace,
A fellow LEO
