Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer David Noel Seibert

I was a brand new TPD sergeant (promoted August 1, 1967) when I arrived at the market in response to the shooting and, along with another sergeant, assisted Officer Siebert unto a gurney and into the ambulance. The sounds of him moaning in pain as we lifted him are forever embedded in my memory. Dave was a student intern at the department (working on his bachelors degree) before he was appointed a police officer. He was a fine young man and dedicated officer with an obviously successful future police career. Truly a tragic loss to his family, the department and the citizens of Torrance.

Dear Seibert Family,
After all these years, I remember David. He was a handsome, young, attentive recruit at LASD Academy Class 107. I am proud to say, he was one of my many classmates. I specifically remember David as we spoke often and shared our impressions of the fine academy training we were receiving. I also fondly remember Joseph P. Zerbies (also an academy classmate), who has left such a warm remembrance on this post. All of us graduated in August of 1965. David served with distinction and his EOW was only a short two years later. Because I considered David a friend and brother in law enforcement, when his death was reported, I kept a copy of the Torrance Press=Herald newspaper and to this day have that copy in my possession. My prayers have always included a special thought, he may watch over his family and all of us. We will meet again my brother. Truly, you will always be a HERO and sorely missed. May GOD Bless you and your loving family.

Officer Dave Seibert was a very close friend of my father's, Mike Riley, who was on TPD at the time. I don't remember the specifics, but I believe my dad did some of "Mr." (as we were taught to address him) Seibert's training. Dave and his wife were constant guests at our home, and would always make time to play with my siblings and I (ages 5,6, and 7 at his death). I remember so many funny things about him, and he and his wife were great friends with my parents. Like others have mentioned, the Seiberts were in the process of adopting a baby at the time, and on the day he was killed, I remember my mom getting them a gift of baby clothes. Although my memory may be faulty, my dad was the officer who informed Mrs. Seibert of the tragedy. Officer Seibert is remembered by the Riley family with great affection.

David was married to my stepsister, Christine, at the time of his death. Although I was only 11 at the time, I have thought of him quite regularly over the years. I happened to be thinking of him today and did an internet search and found this site.
I'm happy to say I remember him as very handsome and very kind. He had a wonderful smile and attitude. I never lived with Christine and knew her only through my stepfather and mother. They were trying to conceive at the time and my heart broke for her when he was killed.
I can hardly believe how much time has passed and that he died at 25, the same age as my youngest child is now.
I can say that he was brave and wonderful and will be missed by everyone who knew him, even this little girl, who grew up and still remembers his kindness.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 46th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Thanks to your friends for sharing their devotion and respect for you through their reflections.

Dave Seibert was my first partner on TPD. It was a temporary assignment while I was still in the LASO ACADEMY. Then officially designated as the Los Angeles Sheriff's Office, (1967 Class 116), it is now the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD). Dave was a good person and he, and his wife, were planning on adopting a child. What isn't told here is that after JERRY LEE O'BRIEN shot him down in the store, that was a problem false alarm location, he looked down and executed Dave while he was laying wounded. I was sitting in class when I got pulled out of the Academy, to track down the suspect, but he and his partner had left the area. I carried his mug shot around for years and it is still burned into my brain. O'Brien was identified as a possible suspect by a news reporter that recognized his M.O. and notified the PD. He was being pursued by the police when he crashed his car. Because of this tragedy I tried, throughout my police career, to have the CITY institute a policy of punishing FALSE ALARM responses with a fine. False Alarms were a constant problem. The department, or the politicians that ran the City, never instituted my request.
The POS that shot him down has now died while still in prison and I need to put this behind me.

I just saw in today's Daily Breeze that Jerry Lee O'Brien, who is terminally ill was just denied his bid to be released so that he can die outside the prison. As a police wife of a South Bay police officer, I was thrilled to hear that this man will not be allowed a freedom that Officer Seibert does not have because he was coldly shot by this person. Officer Seibert, thank you for your service and rest in peace.

Dave was a genuine, honest and caring person. Dave (Torrance PD) and I Redondo Beach PD) were great friends. We were in the same academy class at LASO, class 107. We were about the same size and weight so we were paired in most hand to hand classes. I remember that he and his wife were in the process of adopting a child just prior to his death. I was probably the last police officer he saw prior to his death. Dave had just started his early morning watch (I believe) and I was ending my night watch. We ran into each other while on patrol on 190th around Anza street and stopped to chat when he received the call. We both were single officer units and very seldom rode two man units. I remember that he wasn't too concerned as the store had repeated false alarms while opening and he figured it was probably another false alarm. He continued on his call and I went off duty. It wasn't until I awoke later in the afternoon and opened the paper that I saw the banner headlines of his death. I was just shocked beyond belief. I can't explain to this day how grim my feelings were. I still think of him so often and always remember the funeral procession. It was incredible how many showed, the playing of taps, etc. I've never been the same and know that one day I'll meet him again. One day we'll get that cup of coffee together. You are missed Dave!

I had been a Torrance Policeman for a little over a year when Dave joined our ranks. To the best of my recollection, Dave was one of the first officers hired on who had received his Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. Dave was a very likable guy, kind of soft-spoken and a pleasure to be around. He was a hard worker, and very thorough about working his beat, always looking for the out-of-the-ordinary or things otherwise suspicious. Though he was nice and soft-spoken, he never hesitated to jump into the fray when called upon to do so. Even after all these years, I still think of Dave ofter, and miss him greatly. Dave, I'll see you at the big roll call in tghe sky. Save a seat for me.

I AM A RETIRED BALTIMORE CITY COP AFTER 25 YEARS WORKING THE STREETS OF THE WORSE DRUG AREAS AND MOST VIOLENT AREAS OF BALTIMORES GHETTO AND UNDER BELLY. AFTER SEARCHING THE ENTIRE COUNTRY FOR SOMEONE WITH THE SAME LAST NAME AND A BROTHER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. AFTER READING ABOUT YOU JUST RESPONDING TO A ROUTINE CALL AS MANY OF US HAD FOR SO MANY TIMES OVER SO MANY YEARS. I FEEL TERRIBLE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I MYSELF HAD A VERY CLOSE BRUSH WITH DEATH, INVOLVING A INCIDENT WITH A DECEASED FELLOW POLICE OFFICER WILLIAM MARTIN. I WISH I COULD HAVE PREVENTED HIS DEATH BY TAKING HIS CALL. INSTEAD MYSELF AND MY PARTNER DIDN'T TAKE THE CALL BUT WE DID RESPOND TO THE FRONT WHERE BILLY MARTIN WAS KILLED. I SAW THE MUZZLE FLASHES AND HEARD GUNSHOTS. I WAS THE FIRST OFFICER TO WALK UP THE STEPS AND I SAW BILLY MARTIN LYING IN A POOL OF BLOOD WITH SEVERAL GUNSHOTS TO HIS HEAD. I ROLLED HIM OVER AND HE WAS DEAD. I FEEL TERRIBLE FOR ALL OF THE DEAD POLICE OFFICERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. RETIRED POLICE OFFICER LOU SEIBERT BALTIMORE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

As a 10-year old, I was at the front of the supermarket (waiting for it to open) with my mother and sister when Officer Siebert's car arrived (he was by himself). I was also there when the paramedics took him out of the market and loaded him into the ambulance. I will never forget Officer Siebert's name and that he gave his life protecting the public. Unfortunately, I also remember the name of the robber that killed him (Jerry Lee O'brien). I was wondering what ever became of him (the web site says he was sentenced to death). Sincerely, Kenji Pitcher
