Reflections for Corporal Julius Norman Schulte

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call... of himself gave his all,
And a part of America died...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 27th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all that love and remember you. Your family is in my heart's embrace today. Thanks to your family for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was in the police academy in Prince George’s County, Maryland when the instructors stopped class and read us the teletype that Corporal Schulte had been killed in the line of duty.

It was a sobering thought that within a few weeks I would be joining the ranks of the Blue Protectors and following in Corporal Schulte footprints.

My police academy class honored Corporal Schulte then as I again have the honor to pay my respects to an American hero.

Watch over us Brother as we continue the struggle to hold back evil.

With the greatest respect,
Brother in Blue

I am so proud to be a part of your family and to have had your grandchildren. I married the wonderful man you raised and called son, and a wonderful wife I call Mom and a great sisterinlaw. And when you were growing up you were a true childhood friend to my Mother. I wished I could have gotten to know you better, but now, whenever I look into the eyes of my children, I can see you there. My last name has been Schulte for over 18 years now and I can say that not a day that passes you are not remembered. I am and always will be proud to have the name Schulte.

To the Schulte Family,

I noted that no reflections have been left for Corporal Schulte since earlier this year. Please know that the ultimate sacriface made by your heroic and beloved warrior is not forgotten. Know that at this moment, my family and I have said a prayer for you and for Corporal Schulte. May God Bless and watch over you all until you are reunited with Julius in heaven.

Respectfully,

I was with Corporal Julius Schulte Just minutes before he answered the Domestic call that lead to his assault. We talked about his upcoming retirement and his future plans. I was also one of the first Officers to arrive on the scene after the incident. To this day, I am still deeply effected by this tragic and senseless murder of a special person and a honored professional. It was a priviledge to be an Honor Guard at his funeral.
