Willie was shot as he looked in in response to an altercation between Det. Tom Brand and one of the suspects. Tom was not shot but rather a uniform officer was shot by Tom's gun (loaded with range wad cutters instead of factory ammo). Willie and Tom had only one pair of handcuffs and one hand from each prisoner was cuffed. The shooter grabbed Tom's gun (in a cross draw holster) after pulling Tom into the car by his tie. As Tom fled to the rear of the detective car the shooter shot at him but missed. Two uniform officers responded to the incident. Gus Moran was shot as he approached the suspect. Al Woodly, the chief fire arms instructor at the Police Academy shot and killed both suspects as they attempted to exit the vehicle. David Rodriguez and I were on patrol and we went to the El Paso Drive Inn Theater where all this took place. Both suspects were laying on the ground outside the vehicle still handcuffed.

Even though it has been Fifty Years, You are still in my Heart felt Prayers. As a child I looked up to you and was in complete awe. I went on to continue in your and Uncle Charlie's footsteps. You both were an inspiration that continues with my own adult children. We were picked to do the Lord's work here and one day I will join you both in "walking the beat" on the Heavenly streets paved with gold. God's eternal blessings be with you. "Sito"

Willie Sanchez was my uncle ans was shot and killed before my birth. My mother was his sister. My other uncle was an El Paso PD officer in the 50's as was my uncle Willie(Lalo). It took CLEAT 44YEARS to honor him on the Texas Peace Officers Wall. There is a street named after my uncle off Piasano St. called Wille Sanchez Lane, in El Paso,Texas. If anyone has any more information on my uncle other than my now deaseaced mother please e-mail me. Thank You.
